ZITF kicks off as some local stands lag behind

ZITF opened in Bulawayo under Connected Economies, Competitive Industries, with foreign exhibitors ready early while many local participants were still setting up their pavilions.

Bulawayo’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) got under way this week, but the opening day brought an immediate contrast: international exhibitors looked ready for business, while many local participants were still working through last-minute setups.

The 66th edition is running under the theme Connected Economies, Competitive Industries, at the Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City.. The fair is expected to be officially opened on Thursday by Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko, with the exhibition continuing through Saturday.

On the ground, the difference in preparedness was visible.. Several international exhibitors had already completed their displays by opening day and were positioned to receive visitors immediately.. Meanwhile, many local stands were still in motion—equipment being offloaded, structures being mounted, and spaces being painted or adjusted as exhibitors hurried to get ready.

A Ghanaian pavilion offered one of the clearest examples of that “ready now” posture.. Representatives at the stand said they were fully set up and keen to engage Zimbabwean buyers.. One exhibitor, participating for the second time after an 18-year gap, described the visit as both a business move and a reconnection with the market.

Kenyan exhibitors echoed similar confidence, saying their products and displays were ready ahead of the opening.. Their readiness also underscored a wider pattern: some foreign participants appear to build their timelines around the fair with fewer interruptions, while domestic exhibitors face more friction before they even reach the exhibition floor.

The visible delays among local exhibitors matter beyond logistics.. ZITF is a high-visibility platform where buyers, distributors, and partners often make early decisions—sometimes on the first day alone.. When a stand is not yet operational, potential deals can slip away to competitors who are already meeting visitors, showcasing product ranges, and answering questions in real time.

There is another layer to the story, however.. Despite the stand-setup gaps, small-to-medium enterprises have shown strong participation this year, and some appear to be leaning into digital tools as part of their displays.. That shift suggests local traders are not just “catching up” in a conventional sense—they are also changing how they present products and communicate with customers.

ZITF organisers acknowledged that pinning down a strict cut-off for pavilion completion is not always straightforward.. Busisa Moyo, the company board chairperson, said setting deadlines could help create a neater exhibition, but it can also be unrealistic when exhibitors are coming from far away or face entry and logistics challenges.

Moyo also pointed to Independence Day celebrations as a contributor to the timing issues.. With parts of the public sector—accounting for a large portion of exhibition visibility—engaged in national activities, some preparation schedules were disrupted.. The result, as the fair opened, was a mixed scene: a portion of the exhibition floor fully ready, and another still being assembled.

Still, ZITF’s scale indicates the event remains strongly positioned as a regional business hub.. Organisers said there are 485 direct exhibitors, including 100 leaseholders, alongside 46 exhibitors from 29 countries.. Participating countries include Botswana, China, Denmark, Eswatini, Ethiopia, the European Union, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Tanzania, and others.

As the fair moves deeper into its week, the early disparity in preparedness may become less visible—but its effects could linger in who gets the attention first.. For local exhibitors, the key challenge is not only getting stands ready, but also ensuring they are operational at the moment visitors begin deciding where to spend time and money.. For the wider business community, ZITF’s opening-day snapshot is a reminder that trade fairs are won as much by readiness and access as by the products on display.
