Yes, that really is Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry dancing in a Montreal hardware store

Former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau popped into a hardware store in Montreal’s Little Portugal with Katy Perry over the weekend and recorded a dance video.

In the video, a sunglassed Trudeau announces “in the Home Hardware on St-Laurent St.” (sic) as he dances. Perry, who appears to have been filming, makes a brief, head-nodding appearance.

Son Xavier Trudeau, who performs as Xav, posted the video to his Instagram on Sunday in support of his new single, Downtown.

About that new single, Kevin Pereira of Quincaillerie Azores/Home Hardware told The Gazette that Xav’s song happened to play on the radio while the pair were in the store on Saturday.

“They just popped in randomly by themselves with one security guard who stood in the front,” he said. “They went about their shopping (and) spent about 45 minutes here.”

Said shopping — or at least the dance break therein — involved a toilet plunger and assorted homewares.

“Cost of living so bad the former PM shops at Home Hardware,” one commenter joked.

After leaving office, Trudeau purchased a $4.26-million home on the northern flank of Mount Royal in Outremont.

He has also been repeatedly spotted around the city with Perry, from their first outing at Le Violon a year ago to Perry’s Lifetimes Tour stop at the Bell Centre to a more recent trip to a yoga studio on St-Laurent Blvd.

Perry, a 13-time Grammy nominee, also appears to be acting as a sounding board with Xav’s budding music career.

In an appearance on the Can’t Be Censored podcast in April, the younger Trudeau said he sends Perry songs when he’s really happy with them.

“She’s always really happy to give me advice or tell me what I should change.”
