Gerrit Cole’s return finally has a date attached to it—Friday night at Yankee Stadium, when the New York Yankees ace is scheduled to make his 2026 MLB season debut against the Tampa Bay Rays in the Bronx.
For months, fans have been watching the calendar and waiting for the next update. On Friday, that waiting ends. Cole’s start versus Tampa Bay will be his first appearance on the mound in big league action in 14 months, with his last MLB appearance coming in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.
That gap is the product of a surgery cycle that no pitcher ever expects to endure for this long. Cole has been unavailable to the Yankees throughout this stretch after he went under the knife for Tommy John surgery in March 2025.
Now, he’s ready to talk about the time away in plain terms—the grind, the uncertainty, and the quiet ways he tried to stay involved without being on the field.
“It’s been tough. I’ve missed it quite a lot. I try to contribute as much as I can without being on the field, finding new ways to add something to the mix,” Cole said, via Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
He also pointed to the emotional edges of recovery: the days that look the same, the conversations that keep the weight from becoming too heavy, and the family moments that arrive when baseball finally has to wait.
“There’s been some blessings along the way as well. We’ve talked about my family and spending time with my boys. but largely. I’m just looking forward to being really tired and having an exhaustion that means something. like high stakes. You feel like it’s worth it. like it’s fulfilled and it’s obviously a tremendously exciting environment. ” Cole added.
Exciting is one word for it. The setup for Friday is another. Cole isn’t returning into a low-pressure script—he’s stepping into a game against one of the AL’s toughest teams.
Entering Tuesday, the Rays were leading the American League East with a 31-15 record, and only the Atlanta Braves had more wins than Tampa Bay in MLB. At 35 years old, Cole will be asked to handle the kind of challenge that turns a comeback from a milestone into a real test of timing and command.

So Friday he’s finally back? I swear it’s always “set for” with this guy lol.
Tommy John for a year+ and he still comes back like nothing happened?? The Rays are good so this might be a rough first outing. Also 14 months is wild, I didn’t realize it was that long.
14 months is crazy but didn’t he already pitch again in between? Like I feel like I remember highlights or maybe that was another Cole. Either way Yankees better not rush him if he’s still cooked.
I just want him to be “tired for real” and not get injured again… he said all this stuff about family and grinding (cool) but I’m looking at the Rays record and like wow that’s not an easy matchup to start on. Yankee Stadium will be loud though so maybe it’ll boost him, or it’ll expose him early. Also MLB schedules are confusing, I always miss when guys actually return.
