X tells Meta employees snacks are the new perk
X offers – Elon Musk’s X has stepped into a workplace-morale fight with Meta, telling “neglected Meta employees” it is hiring web and data engineers and scientists—and promising it will “match or even exceed” any snack budget offer. The pitch comes alongside job pay rang
By Thursday, Nikitia Bier—X’s top product executive—turned something as small as office snacks into a recruiting message aimed directly at Meta employees.
“Neglected Meta employees: X is hiring web and data engineers & scientists,” Bier wrote on the platform. He followed it with a blunt promise: “We will match or even exceed any snack budget offer.”
Bier also gave employees a concrete instruction for anyone applying: use the word “snacks” in the application for software engineering roles. Those roles come with pay between $180. 000 to $440. 000. according to the job listing—enough. he implied. to cover whatever employees would want in an office kitchen. including Dubai chocolate-covered pretzels Bier mentioned as a benchmark for taste.
The message lands in a moment when Meta’s workplace morale has been hit by successive waves of layoffs and AI strategy pivots. Earlier this month, Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth said the company would be taking steps to improve employee morale. In a memo, he pointed to one of those steps: improving the snacks and drinks in Meta office kitchens.
While Meta has been focused on repairing internal morale, X appears to be trying to convert it into recruiting leverage—offering engineers a reason to move that doesn’t start with technology. It starts with what happens between meetings.
The broader corporate backdrop is also part of the pressure-cooker. X is part of xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, which is part of SpaceX. SpaceX had the biggest initial public offering ever last week, and the IPO minted over 4,000 new millionaires at the company. In market terms. xAI’s momentum has been reflected in valuations: the company vaulted past Meta to become the 6th-most-valuable company in the world. behind Amazon. while Meta is now ranked No. 12.
Representatives for X and Meta didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Snacks as a recruiting tool is wild lol
So basically they’re trying to out-snack Meta now? I mean… if the Dubai chocolate pretzels are real that might be the only incentive I believe in.
I think this is just Musk flexing again. Like, “match any snack budget” is such a random metric. Also isn’t Meta laying people off, so how are they even buying snacks in the first place? seems like a PR thing.
They said “use the word snacks in the application”?? That’s kinda embarrassing for the industry honestly. But also if Meta’s morale is bad from layoffs and AI pivots, then yeah I guess free food wins people over. I’m still not convinced this is real though, because half the time these companies say anything to get engineers.
