Wyndham Clark celebrates Father’s Day win as dad surprises

Wyndham Clark won the U.S. Open for the second time in four years on Father’s Day at Shinnecock Hills, then shared a long, emotional embrace with his father, Randall Clark, who flew in unexpectedly from the Denver area on June 21.

Wyndham Clark had already done the hard part on Father’s Day.

He walked up to the 18th green at Shinnecock Hills and finished the job—sealing a U.S. Open victory with a final putt that left him holding a one-stroke lead over Sam Burns. The triumph marked Clark’s second U.S. Open title in four years, but the way it played out felt anything but routine.

Clark didn’t just win. He led wire-to-wire and held steady even after starting the day six shots ahead of the next-closest players in the field. When the tournament tightening came, he stayed ahead of it—until the last roll of the ball confirmed it.

Then came the moment many people will remember more than the scoreline.

After Clark’s putt, members of his group of friends and family surged out onto the 18th green to congratulate him. Several hearty hugs and hand slaps followed, the kind of celebration that usually happens fast and then settles into relief.

Clark turned around in the middle of it and saw his father, Randall Clark, approaching from a different direction.

What made the scene land so sharply wasn’t only that Randall was there. It was that he wasn’t supposed to be there.

NBC’s Mike Tirico reported that Randall Clark flew in from the Denver area on the red-eye flight Sunday morning, June 21, and was “running on adrenaline” as evening began to fall in the Hamptons.

When the champion finally hustled over, the surprise became the focus. The two shared a long embrace—close enough to slow everything down, even with the green still buzzing around them.

Randall Clark said, “I’m so proud of you.”

Wyndham Clark answered, “Thank you pops. I’m glad you could be here.”

For a champion who already had history on his side, it was the unplanned timing of a father’s arrival—after an overnight flight—that turned a well-earned win into something more personal, the kind of moment that doesn’t fit neatly into a highlight reel.

  1. Wait so he started the day six shots ahead and still people were like “hold on” at the end? That’s honestly stressful. Also Father’s Day win like the universe planned it.

  2. I don’t get why they’re acting like it was a surprise. If he’s his dad, wouldn’t he already be there? Sounds staged to me but whatever, congrats.

  3. Aww that hug is gonna make me cry, I swear. I watched a clip where he sinks the putt and then suddenly everyone’s running onto the green which… don’t they usually not do that? But I guess for him it’s different. Either way happy Father’s Day to Randall too, adrenaline flight or not.
