Worthy turns shoulder surgery into Chiefs’ next step

Xavier Worthy says the Week One shoulder injury he played through last season led to January surgery that became a deeper reset for his development—strength, mental preparation, and a clearer plan to prove himself in 2026.

Xavier Worthy remembers the question as soon as it came—what it feels like to compete on the practice field with the Chiefs’ other wide receivers. For someone who once ran the fastest 40-yard dash in Scouting Combine history, standing out is almost automatic.

“No question I’m the fastest,” Worthy said.

But the speed that made him a first-round pick can’t cover everything. Last year. his production took a step backward after he played through a Week One shoulder injury. and this week he pointed to the surgery he had in January as the turning point that will help him in the long run. His focus during recovery wasn’t just getting back to health—it was preparing his body and sharpening his approach like a professional.

“With the shoulder injury. I had that surgery in January. really it was just building on. getting stronger. getting back in the flow. ” Worthy said. “It might have been the best thing for me. learning how to be a pro. learning how to approach the mental aspect and just getting your body prepared for certain things.”.

What he’s trying to correct isn’t abstract. Worthy said his injury-plagued 2025 season didn’t show what he can really be as an NFL receiver.

“I’d definitely say that’s not a true indication of what I am,” he said. “I was limited in certain things. I want to come back out here and show my ability and what I can do.”

There’s a straight line through the way Worthy describes it: elite speed sets expectations. the shoulder injury disrupted the execution. and the January surgery gave him time to rebuild beyond the physical. When that view is compared to how he talks about what’s next. the theme becomes clear—he wants his performance to match the player the Chiefs drafted.

Worthy believes 2026 will be the year that answers the doubters. He’s convinced the injury issues didn’t change who he is, and that the work since the surgery will show up on the field.

“In 2026, I’m going to demonstrate why the Chiefs were smart to draft me,” Worthy said. “I know the kind of player I can be. The things I can do on the field, what I can bring to the team.”
