Early U.S. ratings for FIFA World Cup coverage are trending strongly, especially for U.S. matches. In entertainment and sports media, SportsNet Pittsburgh let go of Penguins sideline reporter Hailey Hunter, while other TV developments continue across streaming
The World Cup landed in living rooms and, for now, it’s turning into must-watch TV. Early ratings for FIFA World Cup games broadcast on Fox, Fox One and Tubi are strong, a lift tied to the tournament being staged in America.
Matches featuring the American team are leading the pack. On June 12, the U.S. vs. Paraguay match averaged 15.9 million viewers, reaching a peak of 18.8 million viewers between 10:45 and 11 p.m. That viewership was up 106 percent compared to America’s first match against Wales in 2022. and Fox Sports says it was the most-watched U.S. Men’s National Team FIFA World Cup English-language telecast in U.S. history.
The momentum has carried over from the opener. On June 11, the Mexico vs. South Africa match drew 7.1 million viewers. making it the most-watched FIFA Men’s World Cup opening match in English-language U.S. history. Ratings for that opening match were up 150 percent compared to Qatar vs. Ecuador on FS1 in November 2022, which drew 2.8 million viewers.
On the weekly sports leaderboard, the tournament is dominating. For the week of June 8–14, Nielsen data shows 19 of the Top 25 live televised sporting events were World Cup matches. The Top 3 spots on the sports ratings chart were NBA finals games. but the rest was World Cup-heavy. with USA vs. Paraguay sitting at No. 4. Beyond World Cup coverage. the only other non-World Cup events in the Top 25 were hockey’s Stanley Cup games at No. 12, 14 and 17.
The reach is showing up across viewing platforms too. Among all broadcast, cable and live streaming programs, FIFA World Cup game coverage took nine of the Top 25 slots.
Those numbers hold up locally as well. More than three times as many viewers watched the June 12 American match locally (109,305 local viewers) compared to the June 11 Mexico vs. South Africa game (31,705 local viewers).
The business side of this week’s TV slate isn’t limited to sports, though.
