The Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already coming into focus, and it’s doing it the same way knockout football usually does: fast, unforgiving, and full of surprises.
At Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo in Thailand. a hippo appeared to “pick” USA over Australia as the winner. while the World Cup picture elsewhere has been shaped by results that refuse to stay tidy. As the elimination rounds roll on. seven teams have secured their spots—proof that once teams are on the brink. clear favorites rarely stay clear.
Canada made the first move. It became the first nation to claim a place in the Round of 16 by recording its inaugural knockout stage victory. The win came against South Africa, finishing 1-0 after extra time.
Brazil also advanced, surviving a tense encounter against Japan in the Round of 32 in Houston. Japan took an early lead in the knockout match with Kaishu Sano scoring in the first half. Casemiro leveled in the early second half, and Gabriel Martinelli then sealed a 2-1 victory for Brazil.
The shocks arrived too. Germany crashed out of the World Cup, losing to Paraguay on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Boston. The Netherlands were eliminated as well, falling to Morocco on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in Guadalupe, Mexico.
On Tuesday, three more Round of 16 spots were claimed, including Mexico advancing with a win against Ecuador.
The sequence of these results has left the Round of 16 field looking anything but comfortable—teams are booking tickets, but the manner of qualification is packed with narrow margins, extra-time drama, and the kind of penalty shootout swings that can erase entire tournament narratives overnight.
Teams that have booked their place in the round of 16 are: Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, Morocco, Norway, France, Mexico.

2026 World Cup Round of 16 Canada vs Morocco Brazil vs Norway Mexico vs Ecuador Germany eliminated Netherlands eliminated Paraguay France World Cup bracket
So Canada beat South Africa 1-0 in extra time and then that’s already Round of 16?? Congrats to them I guess.
The whole “upsets hit” thing is kinda rigged though. Like penalties decide everything and then people act surprised. Also that hippo picking USA over Australia sounds like the only honest predictor 😂
I swear I saw on TikTok that USA was gonna advance because of the hippo or whatever, now it’s Brazil and Canada?? Idk how these brackets work half the time. If Germany got out on penalties then that just proves penalties are a joke.
Canada beating South Africa after extra time is wild but I’m more hung up on Germany and Netherlands both going out on pens like that’s just normal now. Didn’t it say Mexico was advancing too? Half these teams are gonna be tired by Round of 16, then everyone’s gonna be like “anything can happen” again. Also the Brazil/Japan scoreline feels low-key like a coin flip.
