A woman was shot dead by officers after police say she stabbed two people in Times Square late Monday afternoon, killing one and injuring another.
A woman fatally stabbed in New York City’s Times Square on Aug. 31 has been identified as Erin Piacenti, a vice president for Bank of America, the U.S. institution confirmed.
Piacenti, 32, was stabbed in the abdomen after police say suspect Pamela Cisneros pulled out a pair of knives and attacked Piacenti and a 68-year-old man, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. She was a valued teammate who will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones,” Bank of American told USA TODAY on Sept. 1.
Piacenti was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The man, who police said was also stabbed in the abdomen, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and had been listed in stable condition.
Police have said they attacks appeared random and unprovoked, and that officers fired their pistols after Tasers failed to stop the woman from advancing toward them with knives.
Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
“We know that those families’ lives have been shattered by what took place today, and we will continue to hold them close as the hours and days and weeks continue from this moment,” Mamdani said during an evening news conference.
