WNBA warns Fever over late Caitlin Clark scratch

WNBA warns – Indiana Fever’s 90-73 win over the Portland Fire came with a separate jolt for the franchise: Caitlin Clark was ruled out less than two hours before tip-off, triggering a league warning over the Fever’s injury reporting ahead of the game.

Caitlin Clark sat out again, and Indiana still rolled—90-73 over the Portland Fire at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

But the evening carried an extra sting for the Fever. The team ruled out Clark less than two hours before tip-off, and the league said the way Indiana reported the situation wasn’t aligned with its protocols. Indiana initially filed a clean injury report against Portland.

Clark, sidelined by a back injury, has been managing the issue since the Fever’s game against the Dallas Wings. She downplayed it in the run-up to the Portland contest: Clark did not practice before the face-off with the Fire, even as she had been dealing with the same problem.

What made the timing so noticeable is that the Fever’s internal picture appeared to change very late. Stephanie White said Clark did not practice yesterday, and there was no indication Clark was dealing with an ailment until she was ruled out 100 minutes before tip-off.

That late pivot is exactly where the scrutiny began. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou suggested on X that the WNBA might penalize Indiana for the late scratching, writing that the league may take a look at the sequence—especially given White’s comments on the lack of practice and the 100-minute timeline.

A few moments after that speculation, The Athletic’s Annie Costabile posted that the Fever received a warning rather than a fine. The league confirmed to The Athletic that Indiana was not fined but was issued a warning regarding its reporting of Clark’s injury ahead of the game against the Fire.

For Fever fans, the controversy lands on top of a growing concern about recurrence. After the loss to the Wings, Clark admitted she had to get her back adjusted, while also saying she felt great. Wednesday’s game again found her on the sideline.

Even with Clark out, Indiana’s status in the standings remains steady: the Fever are 3-2, while Clark’s individual numbers for the season stand at 24.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 1.0 steals. She has been a two-time All-Star and was limited to 13 games last season due to various ailments.

Clark was listed as probable for the Fever’s game against the Golden State Valkyries on Friday.

The Fever’s win over Portland was emphatic on the scoreboard. Off the court, though, the league’s warning has put a spotlight on how quickly Clark’s status shifted—and how that shift was communicated.
