After a lottery that started with a 14% chance of winning the No. 1 slot, the Washington Wizards did exactly that on May 10 during the NBA Draft Lottery—setting up their first No. 1 selection since taking John Wall in 2010. The timing matters: the franchise is coming off the three most challenging seasons in its 65-year history. including a 17-65 campaign this year.
The Wizards’ path to the top pick means Tuesday’s selection can’t just be “another year” for a team that has been searching for answers. It arrives as the franchise tries to reset after seasons that have tested patience across the organization and among fans.
Utah won its share of leverage too. The Utah Jazz secured the No. 2 overall selection, while the Memphis Grizzlies will go next at No. 3. The Chicago Bulls took No. 4, and the LA Clippers picked at No. 5 after acquiring that slot through a trade with the Indiana Pacers.
The first round of the 2026 NBA Draft also includes a long list of teams with picks acquired directly or through prior deals, ending with the New York Knicks at No. 22. That full order is now locked for the night.
