For a second straight day, Celtics fans have had to weigh the same unsettling question: how real are the rumors linking Boston to Giannis Antetokounmpo? In an offseason full of speculation, NBA reporter Brian Windhorst is pressing pause—hard.
Speaking to ESPN Cleveland earlier this week. Windhorst said the price the Bucks would want for Antetokounmpo will inevitably be high. Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and a 2021 NBA champion, is 31 and is entering the final year of his locked-in contract. He also has a player option in 2027-28. Windhorst pointed to the reality that injuries have affected Antetokounmpo in recent seasons. but he didn’t suggest those concerns are what’s stopping a trade.
What’s stopping it, according to Windhorst, is the lack of a real offer. “What they’re being offered is just not that,” Windhorst said, describing the package that would be required to trade a franchise pillar like Antetokounmpo.

Even with those doubts, Windhorst acknowledged the appeal on the Celtics side. Antetokounmpo would instantly help shore up Boston’s front court, which struggled during its playoff loss against the 76ers. Any deal for Antetokounmpo would also further amplify Boston’s intent to win in the short term.
