For the third morning of this early fire season, the wind kept doing what it always does—pushing flames into dry brush and leaving people watching the sky for any change.

The Santa Rosa Island fire has grown to 17. 500 acres. a stretch of land that firefighters are working to contain as conditions remain unforgiving. Not far from that, the Sandy fire in Simi Valley has burned through about 2,100 acres, with its growth reportedly stalling. By Tuesday afternoon, the wind-driven blaze had scorched nearly 1,400 acres.

The Sandy fire is fueled by dry brush along hillsides. and it has been moving with the kind of speed that turns ordinary routines into constant attention. A helicopter was seen dropping water as firefighters worked along a ridge in Runkle Canyon. Crews on the ground cleared brush near Redwood Grove Court, as aerial assets made retardant drops from the air.

Elsewhere, the early start shows up in the numbers. Together, the major fires described here are consuming more than 20,000 acres.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said he secured federal assistance aimed at reimbursing 75% of suppression costs. The request for federal aid comes as fire crews continue to contend with the practical fallout of rapid growth—resources spent. terrain burned. and families weighing how quickly the next shift in weather could change what they can do the rest of the week.

The contrast between the Sandy fire’s slowed growth and the Santa Rosa Island fire’s continued expansion has been felt on the ground. In Simi Valley, residents have watched helicopters make water drops and tracked the large plume rising over Runkle Canyon. Nearby. firefighters and aircraft have been working in tandem—retreating only when the work demands it. advancing when the wind allows.
