Wienermobiles race into Indy 500 weekend at IMS May 22

Ahead of the Indy 500, six Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles will compete in the second annual Wienie 500 on May 22 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with streaming on Fox and FOX One starting at 2 p.m. ET.

By the time IndyCars take over the Brickyard for the Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway will have already hosted something delightfully different.

On Friday. May 22. six Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles will drive onto the track for the second annual Wienie 500—two days before the traditional race day arrives. The event is built for fans who want more than a warm-up: it’s a proper competition. complete with a trophy and drivers who will be watched as closely as any headline race.

Last year’s inaugural Wienie 500 ended with a pass that turned the race into a story fans still talk about. The Slaw Dog Wienermobile overtook the Chi Dog vehicle, which had the pole position, to take the top spot. The winner received the Borg-Weiner Trophy.

Kelsey Rice, Oscar Mayer’s brand communications director, said in a news release that the first race proved the Wienie 500 was “more than just a one-time spectacle.” This year, the company is “turbo-charging all race elements” for a fresh take on the experience fans “fell in love with year one.”

Six Wienermobiles will compete at IMS

Oscar Mayer created its first Wienermobile in 1936. Today, the company has six Wienermobiles that travel the United States during the year. For the Wienie 500, each one functions as a regional hot dog for fans to cheer for.

The competitors are:

Slaw Dog (Southeast)
Chi Dog (Midwest)
New York Dog (East)
Chili Dog (South)
Seattle Dog (Northwest)
Corn Dog (National)

Several other Wienermobiles missed the final cut this year, including Puka Dog (Hawaii), Plain Dog, Idaho Dog, Ripper Dog (New Jersey), Sonoran Dog (Arizona) and Denver Dog.

The race marks the second running of the Wienie 500, with the next Indy 500 scheduled immediately after, when IndyCars take over the Brickyard.

How to watch Wienie 500 on May 22

If you missed last year’s online buzz, there’s a clear sign the event is gaining momentum. The inaugural race was streamed on the Fox Sports app and on @INDYCARonFOX social platforms, drawing an online audience of 8 million. It also drew 85,000 fans to the speedway in 2025.

This year’s coverage expands. The Wienie 500 will be broadcast on Fox and on FOX’s official streaming service, FOX One, starting at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT on Friday, May 22.

For fans staying home, Oscar Mayer is also offering a way to pick a winner. If you can’t make it to the track, you can pick your winner on Instacart for a chance to win free hot dogs and a $300 Instacart gift card. The speedway’s website also lists Wienie 500 T-shirts for sale.

Comedian Andy Richter will be the event’s “commander in beef,” providing pre-race commentary. Ahead of the race, organizers will also sing the Wiener Anthem.

What’s at stake: Borg-Wiener Trophy and a 2026 wreath

The prize is designed to match the pageantry of the weekend. The winning team will receive the Borg-Wiener Trophy, made by the automotive and power company BorgWarner. BorgWarner also made the Borg-Warner Trophy awarded to the Indy 500 winner.

BorgWarner CEO and president Joe Fadool said the company set out to create a trophy “as unforgettable as the race itself.” He added that BorgWarner is partnering with Oscar Mayer to craft an “Official Borg-Wiener Trophy” ready for “the ultimate full throttle finish.”

Along with the trophy, the winning team will receive the 2026 Oscar Mayer Wienie 500 Wreath, decorated with yellow and red-throated cymbidium orchids representing mustard and ketchup.

Fadool said, “May the best Wienermobile win,” and described the plan to present the Borg-Wiener wreaths in Wieners Circle. He is also scheduled to present the trophy to the winner.

IndyCar drivers add tips for the Wienermobile crew

There’s another layer to the weekend’s preparation. New this year, IndyCar Series drivers including Nolan Siegel, Sting Ray Robb, and Scott McLaughlin will be giving tips to the Wienermobile drivers.

Even before the checkered flag in the main Indy 500 countdown. the track will be packed with people looking for something fun—but also. for this one day. something competitive. The Wienie 500 runs May 22. at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. right in the narrow window where a holiday of hot dogs and high-speed culture overlaps.
