Wide iPhone Fold dummy appears as delay rumors swirl

A fresh-looking “dummy” for the rumored iPhone Fold just popped up, and it’s already giving people something more concrete to stare at than vague concept sketches. Misryoum newsroom reported that it’s the first clear look at what an oddly wide foldable might look like, even if the details still feel frustratingly incomplete.

The images, shared on Bluesky this morning by leaker and journalist Sonny Dickson, reportedly show a unit meant for early accessory design and testing. The dummy is shown from both sides, but the inside doesn’t really answer the big design questions—there’s no clear peek at how a selfie camera or Face ID sensors might be arranged. So yeah, it’s a look at the outline more than the “how it works” part.

What is actually noticeable is the outside. The phone appears unusually wide and, in a raised pill-shaped island, it carries two rear cameras side-by-side stretching about two thirds of the way across that broad body. Dickson doesn’t give exact measurements, and honestly it’s hard to judge size from photos alone, but the dummy looks squatter and wider than any book-style foldable we’ve seen so far.

There’s also a comparison thread people can’t stop pulling on. Misryoum newsroom analysis indicates it’s closest in style to Google’s first-gen Pixel Fold, though it appears wider still than that phone. That might sound strange at first—why make it even broader?—but there’s a separate rumor running alongside it: Samsung is also reportedly working on a “Wide Fold” variant that could land later this year. If that’s true, then maybe this form factor isn’t a one-off. Maybe multiple companies are circling the same shape for different reasons.

And then, of course, the timing question refuses to go away. Apple has been widely expected to launch the first foldable iPhone alongside the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max at its usual iPhone launch event in September, with the base iPhone 18 to follow in 2027. Misryoum editorial desk noted, though, that the schedule may be in doubt because early engineering tests of the foldable reportedly hit production problems.

Nikkei Asia reports that early production runs have encountered “engineering challenges” that are taking longer to resolve than expected, which “could delay the first shipment by months.” One source told Nikkei, “Apple and the supply chain are working under a pressured timeline and the current solutions are not enough to completely solve the engineering challenges,” adding, “More time is needed.” Misryoum also saw the same direction in a recent prediction by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that the foldable will ship some time after the two Pro iPhones, even if it’s revealed alongside them.

In the meantime, the dummy gives the market a tease: a wide, pill-island camera layout and a silhouette that looks built for real-world cases, not just marketing. In my kitchen this morning, my phone buzzed with the new images while the kettle hissed—small moment of normal life, surrounded by big tech uncertainty. The gap between “looks like” and “can ship” is where this story is currently living, and honestly… it might be longer than anyone expected. By the time it’s ready, it could also be competing against whatever shape Samsung ends up backing—if that Wide Fold rumor stays warm.
