Why ‘Braut Haaland’ sits on Haaland’s World Cup jersey

Erling Haaland’s Norway World Cup jersey includes the words “Braut Haaland” to honor his parents—“Braut” from his mother’s maiden name and “Haaland” from his father’s last name. The mark stands out against his early World Cup impact, including two goals in Nor

When Erling Haaland put the ball into the net twice in his World Cup debut. the moment felt like a reminder of how ruthless the world’s top scorers can be. But for Norway fans watching on Tuesday. June 16. there was another detail worth a closer look: the name “Braut Haaland” on the back of his jersey.

Haaland scored in Norway’s Group I match against Iraq at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The first goal came when he tapped the ball in during a fast-paced play. Later, he outsmarted the goalkeeper and pushed the ball into the net for a brace.

Beyond the finishing, the jersey text carried meaning. “Braut Haaland” was written to honor his parents. “Braut” is his mother’s maiden name, and “Haaland” is his father’s last name.

The person behind “Braut” is Gry Marita Braut, described as a track and field star and an accomplished heptathlete. The father behind “Haaland,” Alf-Inge Haaland, was also a successful soccer player and spent time with Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Manchester City as a defender.

Haaland’s World Cup start fits the profile fans have tracked for years. He was the fastest player to hit several scoring marks in the Premier League. and he currently has 112 goals in the top tier of English soccer. He was also the youngest player to reach 50 and 100 goals. In the 2022-23 season, he broke the Premier League record with 36 goals in one season.

The numbers on the scoresheet have been the headline, but the jersey detail adds a quieter layer to the story—family name, family history, carried onto the biggest stage.

Norway’s schedule continues with more Group I matches. On June 22 at 8 p.m. Eastern time (Fox), Norway plays Senegal at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Then on June 26 at 3 p.m. Eastern time (Fox), France faces Norway at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

  1. Wait so it’s not his name? “Braut Haaland” sounds like a sponsor or something, but okay family tribute I guess. Still wild he’s scoring like crazy and they’re worried about the shirt back.

  2. If the jersey says “Braut Haaland” then why is it on HIS back? Like I don’t get it, is that his mom’s last name or what. Also he scored against Iraq right? I feel like I saw a clip where he had 2 goals in one game so this checks out, just seems like too much to write on a jersey.

  3. I thought “Braut Haaland” was like a nickname or something, not his parents’ names. They really let a track athlete mom and a former defender dad get mentioned like that? Also the article said Gillette Stadium and MetLife Stadium… like did they play in both places already or is this like future matches? Either way he’s scoring, numbers don’t lie.
