Rep. Ralph Norman lost to Sen. Darline Graham and, more importantly, President Donald Trump’s coveted endorsement in the Republican South Carolina primary runoff Aug. 25.
Graham is the younger sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who died in July. She was temporarily appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster to replace her brother, and she will go on to likely victory in November in the heavily Republican state.
Norman is a five-term congressman, largely unknown outside the Palmetto State, who drew support from former Gov. Nikki Haley, former Gov. Mark Sanford and controversial outgoing Rep. Nancy Mace. Norman placed third in a Republican gubernatorial primary in June.
Norman endorsed Haley over Trump in the 2024 presidential primary. That came back to haunt him when Trump endorsed Graham and campaigned for her.
Graham took aim at Norman on the campaign trail for being a career politician.
“I’ve already done more in 20 days than he’s done in 20 years,” Graham told Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt on Aug. 24.
A longtime legislator
Norman first served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2006 and again from 2009 to 2017 after working for his family’s well-known commercial real estate development company, the Warren Norman Company, which was founded by his father.
He was then elected to serve the state’s 5th District in Congress in 2017. The father-of-four adult kids and his wife of 51 years, Elaine Rice Norman, live in his hometown of Rock Hill, South Carolina near the North Carolina border.
Norman is the 26th richest member of Congress, including both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to Quiver Quantitative Live Net Worth Tracker’s list.
