Whitaker, Stahl and Wertheim weigh departures after firings

Whitaker, Stahl – Bill Whitaker, Lesley Stahl and Jon Wertheim met privately for an hour Wednesday to discuss their futures on “60 Minutes,” as the program continues to convulse after a new round of firings and contract uncertainty for Stahl.

Bill Whitaker, Lesley Stahl and Jon Wertheim didn’t hold their meeting in public. An hourlong private discussion Wednesday was meant for something more practical than speculation: their futures at “60 Minutes,” after another round of departures at the newsmagazine.

The timing matters. Stahl’s contract has expired, and it’s unclear whether she’ll return for the show’s next season. Whitaker, meanwhile, is considering his options and could choose to leave the program, with three sources describing his deliberations. For a team that has long been part of the show’s steady rhythm. the uncertainty now feels immediate—weeks after the program’s latest upheaval.

The questions about where the three correspondents stand didn’t appear from nowhere. This week’s renewed attention follows the firing of Scott Pelley. whose contract was terminated after he clashed with new executive producer Nick Bilton. Before Pelley’s exit, CBS terminated correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi, along with executive producer Tanya Simon.

Even beyond those changes, the show’s bench has been thinning. Anderson Cooper—who also worked on “60 Minutes” during its latest season—announced in May that he would exit.

At the center of the turmoil is the leadership change that set the tone for the reshaping of CBS News. The drama has been tied to the installation of right-wing columnist Bari Weiss as CBS News’ editor-in-chief. Weiss took the helm after the Trump administration-approved merger of CBS’s parent company, Paramount, with Skydance. Since then, she has faced repeated accusations that she was trying to curry favor with the president.

One flashpoint came when the broadcaster abruptly pulled a “60 Minutes” segment about Venezuelan immigrants the Trump administration sent to a prison in El Salvador shortly before it was scheduled to air.

Pelley’s fall appears to have sharpened the stakes even further inside the building. During a tense all-hands meeting Monday. Pelley criticized Weiss. reportedly saying: “She’s murdering ‘60 Minutes. ’” and adding. “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.”.

The sequence of departures—Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi first. then executive producer Tanya Simon. followed by Scott Pelley after his clash with Nick Bilton—has placed the program’s next chapter in the hands of people now assessing their own risk. Wednesday’s meeting involving Whitaker. Stahl and Wertheim didn’t settle anything publicly. but it confirmed what many watching already feared: even long-running journalists are now weighing whether the show’s direction still matches their place in it.

  1. So they’re all leaving because of some “contract uncertainty”?? Sounds like layoffs dressed up as drama.

  2. I don’t even watch 60 Minutes anymore but this feels like CBS trying to be political or something. They keep blaming contracts but it’s really the leadership change right? Also Bari Weiss… idk she’s kinda controversial.

  3. Wait Nick Bilton clashed with Scott Pelley and then other people got fired too?? That’s like dominoes but backwards. And “Bari Weiss right-wing” like… I thought 60 Minutes was supposed to be neutral. If they fire the wrong people it becomes TMZ news lol.

  4. This article makes it sound like Bill Whitaker and Lesley Stahl are plotting in a room for an hour like it’s Survivor. Stahl contract expired… so she’s out, simple. But then it says she “might” return next season like she can negotiate after getting sidelined? Also Anderson Cooper leaving already, so who even is the show for now. Feels like CBS is selling the brand to some agenda after that Paramount Skydance thing (which I barely understand).
