Incognito Chat – Meta says WhatsApp users will soon be able to chat privately with Meta AI using end-to-end encryption and private processing.
WhatsApp users may soon be able to take their Meta AI conversations fully private. in a way that even Meta says it can’t access.. The company is rolling out a new mode called Incognito Chat with Meta AI. designed to let people talk with the chatbot while keeping the content protected under end-to-end encryption.
Meta described the feature as a WhatsApp experience built around privacy protections that have long been associated with human-to-human chats on the messaging platform.. During Meta’s LlamaCon generative AI conference in April 2025. it revealed it was working on this capability. positioning it as a way to have “clandestine” conversations with a chatbot rather than one that merely hides content behind softer privacy promises.
At the heart of Incognito Chat with Meta AI is technology Meta calls Private Processing.. Messages exchanged in this mode are handled in what the company says is a secure environment that no one else can access. including Meta itself.. The practical goal is to reduce the risk that chatbot conversations could be viewed. intercepted. or retained through processes that normally support analytics or model improvement.
Meta also says the messages aren’t saved and are set to disappear by default.. That matters because chatbot interactions are often treated as data that can be stored for debugging, moderation, or later training.. In this mode. Meta states the conversations won’t be used to train its AI models. aligning the feature more closely with users who want privacy for sensitive questions.
The company is clearly responding to a growing concern around how people use AI assistants for more personal subject matter.. Meta specifically pointed to the kinds of topics users may ask about. including health. finances. work. and personal issues. and suggested that “incognito” offerings from other apps may not provide the same level of separation because they can still access both sides of the dialogue.
Over the coming months. Meta plans to expand availability of Incognito Chat with Meta AI gradually. rolling it out to all WhatsApp users and also through the Meta AI app.. The staggered release approach indicates the feature is being tested for real-world use at scale rather than deployed all at once.
Meta is not stopping at private chatting in WhatsApp.. It is also building a separate capability called Side Chat with Meta AI. which it says will let users have private conversations with Meta AI about a conversation they’re already engaged in.. The idea is that people could ask questions about the chat. or request summaries of what was discussed. while still keeping that interaction within the privacy-focused framework Meta is emphasizing.
Side Chat with Meta AI is expected to arrive in the coming months as well. putting Meta’s privacy push on a multi-feature timeline.. For users. that could mean different ways to invoke the assistant depending on whether they want a standalone private conversation or privacy-preserving help attached to an existing thread.
The announcement lands shortly after Meta began publicly testing a Grok-style Meta AI chatbot feature on Threads.. In that case. Meta reported that the rollout sparked backlash from Threads users. who said they didn’t want to engage with Meta AI.. Some also raised concerns that there was no way to block the @meta.ai account on the platform. adding to the frustration around visibility and control.
Taken together. Meta’s move suggests an attempt to address privacy expectations that have become more prominent as AI assistants move from novelty to daily use.. As these assistants increasingly handle questions about personal and sensitive matters. features like message disappearance and private processing are likely to become a differentiator. especially for messaging apps where end-to-end encryption is already a familiar baseline.

So basically it’s private… except it’s Meta. lol
I don’t buy it. If Meta made it, Meta can still see something. “Private processing” sounds like a fancy way to say they don’t tell you everything.
Wait but WhatsApp already has end-to-end encryption, right? So why do they need Incognito? Maybe it’s just for the AI part and not actual chats, idk. Also “disappear by default” usually means like a week.
Not surprised they’re rolling this out after people freaked out about AI data. But “Meta says it can’t access” is like when a company says they won’t sell your info while they’re literally the ones building the system. I’m gonna keep my sensitive questions off there anyway, because the way tech works it still gets recorded somewhere.
