West Marine files Chapter 11, to close 59 stores

West Marine, the Florida-based outdoor retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 17 and said it will close 59 locations across 23 states. The company cited liquidity pressure from long-term leases and ongoing strain in the boating and outdoor recreation
The liquidation signs are already up in some towns. In others, they haven’t—yet. But West Marine’s Chapter 11 filing has set a clear direction: 59 stores are slated to close across 23 states, the company said this week.
The Florida-based outdoor retailer filed for bankruptcy on May 17. according to online court documents. and said the closures are part of its restructuring. In the records, West Marine listed more than 100,000 creditors, and estimated its assets and liabilities each between $500 million and $1 billion.
In a statement. the company said it is closing select retail locations as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 restructuring. framing the move as an effort to align its store footprint with current business needs while continuing to coordinate with landlords. It also said it will support crew members impacted by the closures, though it did not immediately provide additional details.
The store closures will span a wide swath of the country, from California to Wisconsin. West Marine’s website indicates that every store slated for closure will have sales on its merchandise.
In Spokane, Washington, the store posted on Instagram that its liquidation sale has already started and should run through August or September, offering the most specific timing described in the company’s public materials so far.

West Marine did not immediately confirm closing dates for each location.
Why the company is making these cuts also traces back to years of financial strain described in its court filings. West Marine said its efforts to improve its financial situation date back to at least 2023. In March and September of that year, the company recorded significant debt. It also pointed to long-term lease obligations, including 200 leases that it said required $55 million of annual payments.
“The (These leases) have depleted liquidity and proved an insurmountable obstacle that could not be adequately addressed absent this chapter 11 filing,” the company wrote in the records.
The filings also linked the situation to broader pressures on the boating, marine, and outdoor recreation sector. West Marine said the sector continues to struggle in 2026. describing the impact of significantly elevated diesel prices. inflationary conditions. and global supply chain hardships—factors the company said played a role in necessitating the 2023 transactions and “have not abated ever since.”.
For customers. the practical question quickly becomes what happens next: store-by-store liquidations. inventories thinning. and the uncertainty of whether nearby locations will pick up the slack. For the workforce, the question is more immediate. West Marine has said it will support crew members impacted by the closures. but it has not yet laid out how that support will work.
As the Chapter 11 process unfolds, the company’s stated goal is to keep its business steady long enough to rebuild—by shrinking a store footprint it now says no longer matches its needs, while managing the costs of leases and the broader consumer pullback it says has persisted.

So they’re closing 59 stores… but why is it always the small towns that get hit first?
I swear every boating store is dying. Guess people just stopped buying stuff for their boats or whatever. Chapter 11 doesn’t sound like “restructuring” though, it sounds like game over.
Wait I thought West Marine was like a mail-order company too? If they close stores across 23 states, does that mean my local one is closing for sure or they just “plan” to? Also the article says signs are up already, but ours still has normal ads so maybe it’s a rumor?
More than 100,000 creditors?? That’s insane. I’m guessing it’s because the leases were too high and they blamed the boating industry, but I bet it’s really because they didn’t adapt to online shopping fast enough. I bought one thing there once and it felt like prices were stuck in 2010. If they’re closing 59, that means the rest get saved… right? Kinda seems like they picked favorites.
