Wembanyama praises Towns as Knicks’ Game 2 storm

Karl-Anthony Towns is turning his Knicks run into a Finals MVP argument, and Victor Wembanyama made that crystal clear after Game 2—crediting Towns for dragging New York into difficult areas and forcing San Antonio to adjust.

Two games in, the Knicks don’t just look like a team that’s dangerous on offense. They look like a team with an answer—especially in the person of Karl-Anthony Towns. After Game 2. Towns’ impact was so clear that even Victor Wembanyama. the Spurs’ defensive anchor. offered what sounded like an ultimate compliment.

Wembanyama pointed to Towns and the rest of New York’s group as the reason San Antonio is being challenged differently than they were in the rest of their playoff run. Speaking after Game 2. Wembanyama said. “It’s very different from previous series. ” and added that Towns—along with the Knicks—has him and his team “brought into difficult areas because they’re good players. He’s a good player. We need to figure it out. We need to keep working on it. We can do a little bit better. We can do better.”.

The shift starts with shooting. Towns has been the primary reason San Antonio’s formidable defense is starting to break down. San Antonio relies heavily on Wembanyama’s rim pressure on defense. and that pressure has allowed their guards to play aggressively on the perimeter. But with Towns on the floor. the Knicks can run a 5-out scheme that forces Wembanyama to respect New York’s spacing and shooting—changing what the Spurs can consistently get away with.

There’s more, too. One of the biggest knocks that’s followed Towns throughout his career has been his defense. and it’s something people have questioned before. Against Wembanyama, though, Towns is delivering what the Knicks’ opponents likely didn’t expect: his best defensive performance. He’s able to keep up with the French center and wall him off the paint. throwing San Antonio off its preferred rhythm.

In Game 2, Towns finished with 21 points on 8-12 shooting. He also made three of his five three-point attempts. Beyond scoring, he added 13 rebounds and four assists, the kind of full-volume production that turns a matchup into a problem for an entire defense.

Heading into the series, many believed Towns would be the key for New York. After two games, that belief has only intensified. He’s not only fitting into the Knicks’ plans—he’s executing them in a way that has the Spurs searching for answers. and has the Knicks on the brink of their first championship.

Wembanyama’s words captured the tension: it’s not just the numbers Towns is putting up. It’s the way Towns is dragging San Antonio into difficult basketball—both as a shooter and as a defender—where New York’s threats force them to keep adjusting, possession after possession.

  1. I guess Spurs defense really depends on Wemby getting to bully people at the rim and once Towns is hitting 3s it’s over. Knicks fans acting like they already won the whole thing lol

  2. Wait so Wembanyama said it’s “very different from previous series” but like… is that because Towns got traded or something? I’m confused. Also 21 points is good but 13 rebounds?? that part is wild though.

  3. The headline makes it sound like Towns is singlehandedly making San Antonio adjust, like they didn’t have other issues. But okay if his defense was actually good this time then fair. Knicks always look dangerous when they can space the floor, and Wemby “respecting shooting” sounds like a fancy way of saying he can’t just do whatever he wants. I’ll still believe Spurs make it ugly later though.
