Brendan Banfield, a former IRS agent convicted in February over the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in Herndon, Virginia, is expected to be sentenced Friday to a mandatory life term. His au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, already pleaded gui
On a Friday that has been looming since the February verdict, Brendan Banfield is expected to learn how long he will spend behind bars after a jury found him guilty of a deadly catfishing plot.
Banfield. 40. was convicted in February on two counts of aggravated murder. one count of using a firearm in committing a felony. and child endangerment tied to the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at the Banfields’ home in Herndon. Virginia. Because of the aggravated murder convictions, Banfield is set to spend the rest of his life in prison.
The case centers on a highly publicized scheme carried out through an elaborate online lure involving the Banfields’ au pair. Juliana Peres Magalhaes—who was 25—pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She initially faced second-degree murder charges. but she received the lesser punishment after she cooperated with authorities and testified for the prosecution at Banfield’s trial in Northern Virginia.
The legal proceedings are expected to close a story that prosecutors tied to a fetish website. During the trial, Banfield admitted on the stand that he cheated on his wife with Magalhaes and with several other women.
Prosecutors said Banfield’s motive was tied to an affair and that he used the fetish website to lure Ryan. 39. to what he believed was a violent sexual fantasy at the Banfields’ home on Feb. 24, 2023. They said the morning ended with Banfield fatally stabbing Christine Banfield, 37, and shooting Ryan.
In court, Magalhaes said she also shot Ryan. She told the court that Banfield had been trying to avoid a divorce when they embarked on the catfishing plot. According to her testimony. he used Christine Banfield’s laptop to create a fake user profile on the fetish site that purported to be her. The profile was described as “Annastasia9” and. as she said it was presented. it depicted wanting to find a stranger with whom she could act out the sexual fantasy in her home. Ryan was that stranger, Magalhaes said.
Banfield rejected those allegations during his trial, calling them “absolutely crazy.” He testified that he shot Ryan after he saw him stab his wife.
“I did not want to shoot him,” said Banfield, who testified that he was armed with his service weapon. “Um, I wanted him to let her go.”
With Magalhaes already sentenced to 10 years after her plea and cooperation. Banfield’s expected Friday sentencing stands as the final step in a case that stretched from online deception to a violent end at a home in Herndon—where two lives were taken and the legal consequences are now being formally measured in decades and. for Banfield. a life sentence.

Mandatory life for this?? Good. I hate these internet lure stories.
I didn’t realize the au pair already took a plea. But how is it “mandatory life” if they say he cheated and had a fetish website?? Like that’s the same as murder? idk
The headline says Friday but the article’s all tangled, like who did what first. Was the guy luring Ryan through the website or was the au pair doing it? My cousin said it was a “catfishing plot” but then it’s murder??
10 years for manslaughter but she allegedly helped shoot someone?? Seems like the system always goes easier on women or whoever cooperates. Also the IRS thing threw me off—so he used to be an agent and still fell for some online thing, classic.
