Weekend TV and movies hinge on Nicolas Cage returns

From Nicolas Cage’s fedora-clad Spider-Noir on Prime Video to Nate Bargatze’s family comedy The Breadwinner at theaters, this weekend’s lineup mixes nostalgia, satire, and new stars—plus fresh streaming picks including I Love Boosters.
Nicolas Cage didn’t just put on a mask for the screen this weekend—he dug into a whole era. In the Prime Video series “Spider-Noir. ” the Oscar winner plays Ben Reilly. a Great Depression-era private eye who also fights bad guys as Spider-Man. turning a familiar superhero into something harder-boiled and slower-burning.
The story comes in eight episodes, and Cage leans into the performance as both craft and play. “You’ve got to have fun with what you’re doing, and it all goes back to pretending you’re these characters, whether it’s on Halloween or in the backyard with your friends,” he said.
For viewers looking for something different—domestic. loud. and grounded in real family rhythms—Nate Bargatze’s new big-screen comedy “The Breadwinner” is the other headline grabber. Bargatze, who also stars, produces, and co-writes the PG-rated film, turns his stand-up persona into a home-life pressure test. He plays a successful Toyota salesman whose life flips when he takes over at home while his wife. Mandy Moore. goes out on a business trip after landing a deal described as “Shark Tank” sweet.
Bargatze said keeping up with family life is less about grand gestures and more about constant presence. “It’s a lot of FaceTime,” he said. “The hard part, too, is [kids] get older, they get busy. They kind of have their own stuff going on. so it’s just trying to be at as much stuff as I can. and just really knowing what’s going on.”.
The film also arrives with a personal stamp from Bargatze’s own history as a Nashville family man, incorporating bits from his stand-up routine and real life.
If satire and surreal energy are what you’re craving. “I Love Boosters” brings a sharp edge to the weekend lineup. In Boots Riley’s new film. Keke Palmer plays a sort-of modern Robin Hood: an aspiring designer who leads a group of shoplifters in stealing from high-fashion stores and reselling the merchandise at lower prices. During a recent stop at a New York City studio, Palmer said she understood her character’s “hustle and determination.”.
Palmer also traced her character’s drive back to her own early life. She said she was a former child star and that she was the main breadwinner for her parents and three siblings at age 12. “The adaptive intelligence that I’ve been able to create. by way of trying to survive my circumstances. has made me a strong performer. ” she said. “But the cost has been not always being embodied.”.
That blend—comic timing with something underneath—fits the rest of the streaming stack too. The weekend includes new options on streaming services such as John Travolta’s directorial debut “Propeller One-Way Night Coach. ” Charli XCX mockumentary “The Moment. ” and the franchise slasher flick “Scream 7.”.
Even if you stay in one superhero lane. there’s extra reason to pay attention to Cage’s “Spider-Noir.” He not only starred in comic-book roles including “Ghost Rider” movies and voiced Superman in a “Teen Titans GO!” cartoon. he also discussed his deeper “Spider-Man” history. In the series. Cage unpacks his connection to “Spider-Man. ” revealing he almost played the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s 2002 film.
That matters for anyone who watches the genre the way true fans do—less for the premise on paper. more for the layers behind it. This weekend’s picks. from Bargatze’s dad-era scramble to Palmer’s stylish hustle and Cage’s noir swing at the Spider-Man mythos. share one thing: the performances are doing the heavy lifting.

Nicolas Cage in a fedora is literally all I need this weekend. Spider-Noir sounds like it’s just Batman but slower??
Wait is The Breadwinner like some kind of sequel to The Breadmaker or whatever? I’m confused. Also Mandy Moore going on trips makes me think it’s sad? but it says comedy so idk.
Spider-Noir on Prime is already the best thing bc Cage can do anything, right? But Ben Reilly is Spider-Man? I thought that’s like the clone thing so why is he fighting bad guys like, in the Great Depression?? sounds made up.
The whole FaceTime quote is kinda sad honestly, like can’t even be in the room anymore. Also ‘Shark Tank sweet’?? that phrase makes me feel like it’s a commercial disguised as a family movie. Might still watch though if it’s PG.
