The red clay’s first targets

In the men’s draw, No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz was the biggest casualty before the tournament was a day old. Fritz lost to fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy in four sets. Basavareddy, who received a wildcard, ended Fritz’s run early.

No. 23 Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina also fell quickly, losing to Portugal’s Nuno Borges in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

The women’s draw produced its own moments of rupture. No. 21-seeded Clara Tauson lost to Ukraine’s Daria Snigur, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Former champion Barbora Krejckova came closer than most to going out. No. 26 seed Hailey Baptiste saved two match points in a second-set tie-breaker before pulling away to win 6-7 (9), 7-6 (6), 6-2. Krejcikova had two forehands to close out the second set and missed both.

Earlier Monday, another notable upset surfaced: Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, ranked 114th and making her first appearance in the French Open main draw, dismantled No. 5 seed Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 6-0 in an hour and 30 minutes.

The sequence on Monday carried a kind of blunt symmetry: a career finale played out on a major stage, and the tournament’s early rounds answered with results that didn’t ask permission from seedings.

  1. I’m confused, wasn’t Wawrinka like way past his prime like last year? Also Jesper de Jong sounds like one of those random names that just gets hot for a match. Standing ovation is nice but I hate seeing legends go out like that.

  2. So Federer and Nadal showed up in a tribute video but Wawrinka still lost in 4 sets… feels kinda pointless? Like if it’s his last match why not give him a win lol. Not sure how draws work either, but I swear the top seeds always get wrecked on French Open day one.

  3. Day one upsets every year and people act shocked. Like of course a top seed loses at Roland Garros, the clay is basically cheating. Anyway Wawrinka saying it’s the end of the season—does that mean he’s still playing Wimbledon or is he done done? The article says 3 hours emotion then he’s out… tennis is brutal.
