Is the sun better than an oven or a stove?

A heat wave is hitting Texas this week, driving up temperatures to above 100 with heat indices around 110 — marking one of the hottest weeks in summer so far.

But every time it hits triple digits, you might hear a Texan say something along the lines of “it’s so hot out that you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.”

Well, our Texas Connect reporter did just that with some help from colleagues at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. Watch to see the results.

Reporter Mateo Rosiles took the obvious approach to frying an egg, using a stainless steel pan to better conduct heat and to avoid leaving residue on the public sidewalk in downtown Lubbock, Texas.

But he also added a twist, trying to bake dessert using his car dashboard.
