Warriors chase LeBron-Davis reunion before June 30

Warriors LeBron – Golden State Warriors are rumored to be exploring a plan to bring LeBron James to the Bay Area and pair him with Anthony Davis, but it would hinge on a complex Davis trade involving Jimmy Butler, draft assets, and a potential contract discount once free agency

The idea lands like a late-season scramble: LeBron James and Anthony Davis back together, this time with Golden State’s core of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green—plus Steve Kerr on the bench—looking to chase one more championship.

The rumor starts with a specific trading path. A trade for Davis. the reports describe. would have to include Jimmy Butler. who is on an expiring $57 million contract and is recovering from a torn ACL. The Warriors would also need to attach draft capital: they have two future firsts and four first-round swaps to work with in any deal. The timing matters, too. The pitch would be aimed at luring James from Los Angeles once NBA free agency officially opens on June 30.

For Golden State, this would be an attempt to build one last contending roster around Curry. The vision is straightforward: reunite with Davis, team up with Curry and Draymond Green, play under Steve Kerr, and chase another championship with a roster described as one built from legends.

But the plan, as laid out in the same set of details, depends on a string of hard asks.

First, Golden State would need Washington to move Davis. The expectation is that convincing the Wizards is the central hurdle. or that Davis would need to exert pressure for a trade to the Bay Area. Washington. the story notes. appears focused on the future. with a young group built around players including AJ Dybantsa. Alex Sarr. Kyshawn George. Bilal Coulibaly and Tre Johnson. Even more telling. the Wizards acquiring both Trae Young and Davis—and then re-signing Young to a four-year. $212.8 million extension—was framed as an indication they want to be competitive now. not just later.

Second comes the part that would put LeBron’s offseason front and center: whether he would sign with Golden State for less than a max-level market offer. The report suggests James might have to accept a discounted rate. with “think $15 million midlevel exception” as the implied starting point. The difficulty is that. without knowing James’ intentions for this offseason. nothing is locked in—especially because other teams could offer him sign-and-trade options that would keep his next-season compensation closer to market value.

If you put yourself in James’ position. the question becomes immediate: is this path better than simply returning to the Lakers?. The discussion also frames a reason James might look elsewhere—if everyone stays healthy and the on-court fit is real. a Warriors-style run could be a legitimate championship threat. It also suggests James may not want to play for a Los Angeles organization that. at this point. “pretty clear orbits entirely around Luka Dončić.”.

Still, the Lakers’ own plans could complicate everything. They may be trying to improve the roster while also working to retain James. And the same lens notes that potential destinations could extend beyond Los Angeles—mentioning former homes like Miami or Cleveland as teams that could come calling.

One more factor hangs over the entire scenario: the number of moving parts it would take for Golden State to pull it off. A Davis deal would require multiple assets—Butler. future firsts. and first-round swaps—plus the willingness of Washington to sell in a window where they’ve already invested in both Young and Davis. Then Golden State would need James to accept the kind of discount the plan depends on. or to believe the Warriors can deliver a title run that’s worth taking a pay cut for.

If the Warriors could make it happen. the setup would feel like basketball’s version of “The Expendables. ” a last. dramatic swing built around Curry. One way or another. the message in the rumor is clear: expect Golden State to test just how far it can go before free agency opens on June 30—because the payoff. if it comes. would be one more winner shaped around the legends already in place.

  1. If Butler has a torn ACL and they still have to trade him, how is that even a win? Sounds like a bunch of cap gymnastics that only works in video games.

  2. Wait so they’re trading Jimmy Butler to Washington for AD but Washington doesn’t want him? I’m confused… also the article says Wizards are focused on the future with all those young dudes, so wouldn’t they just say no and keep Davis anyway??

  3. This reads like one of those “late-season scramble” rumors where everyone gets traded like dominos. I swear every team always thinks they can get LeBron right before free agency, then it never happens. Plus LeBron Davis reunion, Curry, Draymond, Kerr… that sounds like fan fiction. The draft swaps and “contract discount” part just makes it sound like nobody knows what they’re doing.
