Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski: Love, Fight, Family

From a ferry ride conversation to a 2008 wedding tied to marriage-equality activism, Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski built a life of humor, parenting twins, and public support—while keeping their relationship grounded in daily moments.
Wanda Sykes didn’t meet Alex Niedbalski with a grand plan. In fact, it started with something that sounded almost too silly to matter—talking about a kitchen remodeling job while she was riding a ferry to New York’s Fire Island.
Back in a 2018 interview with The Guardian. the comedian recalled that a friend had advised her to try corny pickup lines to meet people. Wanda decided on something else: she told Alex about the remodel, and the moment stuck. “Something really said to me – like, audibly – ‘Wow, that’s what you need, Wanda,’” she said.
It was the kind of meet-cute that fit Wanda’s life—comedy first, then everything else falling into place around it.
Wanda and Alex married in October 2008, with the timing carrying extra weight. They tied the knot in October 2008. a month before Wanda came out as a lesbian during a rally supporting same sex marriage and pushing back against Prop 8 in California. In an October 2020 anniversary post celebrating 12 years together, Wanda looked back on the fight. “In 2008, we were fighting for marriage equality. We asked [our] friends in lieu of gifts to support #NoProp8,” she wrote. “Although CA Prop 8 passed, we eventually won marriage equality for the country via the Supreme Court.”.
After they wed, Alex took Wanda’s last name, a detail that keeps showing up as part of how they’ve built their partnership—not just as a personal bond, but as two lives moving in the same direction.
Alex’s day job also couldn’t be more different from Wanda’s stage life. Alex is an interior designer, working as a vice president for a kitchen countertop company based in Canada. Even so. her support has been consistent—showing up on Wanda’s Instagram. appearing in comedic videos alongside her wife. and serving as a steady presence behind the laughs.
And then came the family they created together.
After a year of marriage, Wanda and Alex became moms to fraternal twins: a boy, Lucas Claus, and a girl, Olivia Lou. Alex gave birth to the two in April 2009. Wanda’s representative said at the time that “the moms and babies were all doing great,” adding, “All are happy and healthy and at home.”
Parenthood hit them with the kind of exhaustion no punchline can escape. In a 2016 interview with Vulture, Wanda joked about how difficult it was to adapt to parenthood. “The hardest thing to get through was just how tired I was, just the lack of sleep,” she said. She described being so worn down that she was having thoughts that sounded like a joke but weren’t far from the truth: “At one time I was contemplating taking one back. I was like, can we return one?. I mean really, oh my gosh. I was thinking we can’t do this, we’re going to have to take one back.”.
By 2020, the twins were still taking up most of the spotlight. With the COVID-19 pandemic reshaping routines. Wanda told The Hollywood Reporter in 2020 that her days revolved around parenting in constant motion. “The majority of my time now is the cafeteria lady, the janitor, and the hall monitor. It’s crazy,” she said. “By the time they go to bed. Alex and I sit down to watch something. and we barely make it through an episode of anything. We both fall asleep.”.
Even their humor, the thing that made Wanda famous in the first place, shows up in how Alex fits into their everyday life. Alex has sometimes starred in Wanda’s comedy videos on social media and has even been an inspiration for Wanda’s standup.
Wanda’s 2016 Vulture interview also described Alex as “funny. ” even if it was sometimes “unintentional.” On Instagram. the couple has shared clips where both talk to the camera. send messages to fans. and lovingly roast one another. Their videos have gone from sweet to comedic: jokes about holidays or anniversaries. or Alex picking up lessons in how to pronounce French wine names. There have also been times when Wanda teaches her wife dance—like a hilarious video set to “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey.
The tone can shift quickly from punchlines to tenderness. Valentine’s Day in 2020 brought one of the more affectionate moments: Wanda celebrated with an adorable video of her and Alex dancing in their kitchen set to the Bee Gee’s “More Than A Woman.” The two held each other close before wishing Wanda’s fans a Happy V-Day.
All of it lands with an extra layer of meaning because Alex is Wanda’s second marriage.
Before Wanda came out as gay, she was married to record producer Dave Hall from 1991 until 1998. Dave was known for working on albums by Mary J. Blige, Madonna, and Usher. Wanda later reflected on how that relationship influenced her humor. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times. she said. “It just speaks to being in a bad relationship with my husband. ” explaining that she was being direct about why the jokes got sharper. “I was being honest. I wanted to get away. Like: ‘God, there’s his stupid face, and he’s chewing. Ugh, does he have to breathe?. Make him stop breathing.’”.
Since that relationship ended, Wanda said she appreciates her current life in a way that hits like relief. “Now I’m in a great relationship, and I’m happy, so my wife’s chewing doesn’t annoy me,” she quipped.
Through a ferry ride turned into a marriage. a rally tied to Prop 8 and marriage equality. and years of twins. exhaustion. and shared jokes. Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski’s story keeps returning to the same center: they found a partner who makes the hard parts livable—and the laughs feel like home.

Wait so the kitchen remodel thing is how they met?? Honestly that’s adorable lol
Prop 8 passed but they “eventually won” somehow… like did the Supreme Court undo it right away or was it just another court thing? I get lost with all the years. Also Wanda taking her name sounds backwards or something but I guess love is love.
Alex taking Wanda’s last name is such a power move. But also why does it feel like every celebrity relationship story starts with some random conversation like a ferry ride?? I don’t get how people even meet at all anymore. Props for supporting #NoProp8 though, that part I remember.
Ferry to Fire Island then interior job? Idk I stopped reading after the court stuff. Supreme Court stuff always gets boiled down on memes. But the timing like a month before she came out… seems like everyone knew already? Maybe the “kitchen remodeling” was just PR or something, not sure. Anyway congrats to them I guess.
