Walmart+ trims gas by 10 cents—here’s how

use Walmart+ – At an ExxonMobil pump, Walmart+ members can cut gas prices by 10 cents per gallon—if they follow the app’s “Gas savings” flow and use the redemption code it generates for the pump.

The moment the pump screen didn’t recognize the code on Walmart+’s sign, it felt like the discount was slipping away.

At an ExxonMobil station near home, a Walmart+ sign promised members could save 10 cents per gallon. The offer looked simple—until the app walk-through didn’t match what was printed at the pump. The Walmart+ app showed where to start: tap the “Services” button. then select “Gas savings.” The screen brings up the camera view and generates a redemption code at the bottom of the screen. a code the story says is needed for Murphy gas stations. but not ExxonMobil.

There are thousands of participating stations nationwide, the app indicates—covering Exxon, Mobil, Sam’s Club locations, Walmart Fuel locations and Murphy. It also includes a map so you can find the closest participating site.

At the pump, the trouble began. When the camera within the app opened, there was nothing on the Walmart+ sign to scan. The next step asked for a “loyalty ID” at the pump. but entering the app’s code didn’t work—according to the account. those “loyalty ID” steps appear to apply to Murphy stations. not ExxonMobil.

So the only visible options became a quick scan hunt. The station had a standard Walmart+ sign and. on top of the pump. an Exxon Mobil Rewards+ QR code that the account describes as belonging to a different program. Then there was what looked like an unmarked blue QR code. It wasn’t the first time the account had encountered confusing signage—this was described as the second station visited in as many weeks. after a previous attempt that ended with paying full price because the process couldn’t be figured out.

Eventually. the account decided to scan the blue. unmarked QR code from the Walmart+ app’s camera mode. even though there was no Walmart+ logo or any clear indication of what the code was for. The app then prompted for the pump number. After it was entered. the app synced with the pump and the gas price dropped from $5.45 per gallon to $5.35 per gallon.

Once filling was done, the Walmart+ app displayed a thank-you screen summarizing the transaction, and the receipt could be accessed inside the app.

For the bigger picture, the discount is tied to a Walmart+ membership. In this story. the membership is described as a benefit of the American Express Platinum Card®. saving up to $12.95 (plus tax) per month. up to $155 in statement credits annually (with enrollment required and subject to automatic renewal). The account also says Walmart+ is sometimes used for last-minute grocery orders and grocery delivery after trips.

In the end. the gas savings perk looks straightforward on paper—10 cents per gallon at participating locations—but the station signage and the app steps don’t always line up cleanly. If you take a moment to match the app’s flow to what’s posted at the pump. the discount can still land at the register the same day you fill up.

  1. So it’s only Exxon if you do it exactly right? That seems kinda ridiculous. Like why would the sign not even match what the app says.

  2. I think this is just Walmart trying to get you to use their loyalty ID so they can track you at the pump… or whatever. If the code doesn’t work then it’s not really a discount, it’s just bait. Also Murphy vs Exxon sounds like the same thing to me but apparently not.

  3. Not surprised, every time I see one of those blue QR codes at gas stations it’s either broken or it wants some extra step. The article makes it sound like Walmart+ and Exxon are both participating but the pump screen didn’t recognize the code, so I’m guessing they just changed the system. What’s the point of the app if you can’t scan anything off the sign? I’d rather just pay normal price than play phone roulette at the pump.
