A New York farmer revealed pumpkin faces grown in molds, creating spooky characters ahead of Halloween.
Halloween started early at agrotourism venue Echo Fields in Westtown, New York.
From President Donald Trump to Chucky, Todd Lyons, the owner of Echo Fields, is pulling face-shaped pumpkins out of the patch. Lyons has been growing pumpkins inside molds of iconic faces since 2024, and this year is no exception.
Lyons’ pumpkins have caused quite a commotion on social media, with clips of the custom gourds garnering millions of views and likes on Instagram, including one posted in August 2025 that reached 67 million views.
“Once the pumpkin fills out the mold, you remove it and get to see the incredible pumpkin faces. It’s an incredible feeling when you get them to completion, because they’re very difficult,” Lyons told Storyful. “Over half of them rot due to improper airflow prior to completion.”

How did the idea of face-shaped pumpkins come about?
Lyons told USA TODAY that the idea for the project came to him after he saw a video of a farmer in Brazil growing watermelons in “basic square molds” while he was scrolling online.
“I was like, ‘Aw, that’s cool. I wonder if they got something like that that I could find to do for pumpkins,” Lyons said. “So, I started mining it and ended up sourcing; the first year, I just found I was able to get Frankenstein and a skull.”
Lyons has gradually added new faces to his collection, integrating them into the lineup as soon as he gets them. Other notable characters include killer doll Chucky and King Kong.
What started as an “experiment” has turned into a profitable side hustle, with the farmer saying his team “can’t make enough of them” because “they sell immediately.”
Lyons added: “I would say, aside from when you open the mold and take it apart and see that it actually is completed, a favorite part would be just the response you get from people when they see them for the first time.”
A myriad of gourds, including ones that resemble iconic characters, are available for purchase at Echo Fields through the end of October.
