Rose Lavelle exited Gotham FC’s match Sunday, Aug. 23 against Angel City with an apparent head injury, with Mandy Freeman replacing the United States women’s national team midfielder in the 37th minute of the contest.
The substitution was made under the league’s concussion protocol after Lavelle hit her head on the ground after a collision. She was evaluated on the field for several minutes before going directly to the locker room with
Lavelle had been playing her typically tidy game when she went off, completing 16 of 17 passes in the opening portion of the New York squad’s trip to Los Angeles. The match was scoreless when she exited, and neither team was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the half.
Lavelle is a long-time contributor to the USWNT and is expected to be key to the Americans’ hopes in Brazil next summer. She also is critical for Gotham, scoring the only goal in the 2025 NWSL Championship as Gotham won its second league title with a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit.
