Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder has told U.S. men’s national team defender Joe Scally to find a new club as soon as possible.
Scally is entering the final season of his contract and looks set to leave the Bundesliga club after five seasons.
“They will remain fully licensed players, we respect their contracts. But they both have contracts until 2027 and now, of course, they have to ask themselves: How do I position myself? If I were in their shoes, I would definitely be dissatisfied,” Schröder told Bild on Scally and midfielder Florian Neuhaus.
Both Scally and Neuhaus were not part of Gladbach’s squad for its first official game of the season, a 5-0 win over Schott Mainz in the German cup on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Scally has played 167 games for Gladbach since joining from New York City FC in 2021. But the U.S. international said this May that he was open to a new challenge.
“I’ve been here for a long time,” Scally said in a call with members of the media.
“I love the club, but it’s no secret that I would love to experience something different at some point in my career. I think every player has their wishes and what they want to do.”
Scally has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 power Marseiile as well as Premier League sides Bournemouth and Fulham.
The 23-year-old has already been part of two World Cup rosters for the USMNT. After he didn’t see the field in 2022, Scally made two appearances in this summer’s World Cup on home soil.
Overall, the New York native has earned 26 caps with the USMNT.
