US seeks Reddit user’s identity via grand jury subpoena

The US government is pushing Reddit to hand over identifying information about one of its users, using a grand jury subpoena. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is reportedly aiming to identify a Redditor accused of criticizing ICE by April 14.

Misryoum newsroom reported that a subpoena obtained by Misryoum ordered Reddit to provide details about the account. It asks for the user’s name, address, phone number and other personal data—basically enough to make an anonymous account traceable.

According to Misryoum reporting, ICE has been trying to find this Redditor for about a month without success. The effort, Misryoum editorial desk noted, includes a push for Reddit to comply through a grand jury after an earlier attempt to get similar information through a federal court in Northern California failed. That court is tied to San Francisco, where Reddit is headquartered—so the legal route here matters.

Reddit attorneys, Misryoum analysis indicates, argue that their client’s posts and anonymity are protected by the First Amendment. They characterized ICE’s use of a grand jury as “a disturbing escalation,” and said Reddit did not voluntarily plan to share the requested information. In a statement, Reddit said, “privacy is central to how Reddit operates and we take our commitment to protecting that seriously.” The platform also added that it “does not voluntarily share information with any government, especially not on users exercising their rights to criticize the government or plan a protest.”

What happens next is still unclear. Misryoum newsroom reported that Reddit didn’t say whether it would challenge the order. The newsroom also said it’s not clear if ICE will get what it wants easily—or if this becomes another fight over speech and anonymity. Somewhere in all this, a person’s real name is being weighed against their online account, and the stakes can feel pretty lopsided.

While this grand jury subpoena could set an alarming precedent, Misryoum editorial team stated it isn’t the first time a government agency has sought information from social media platforms over criticism of ICE. Misryoum newsroom reported that the Department of Homeland Security has filed hundreds of subpoenas to Google, Discord, Meta and even Reddit again, looking for identifying details about users. That broader pattern is part of why the case is getting attention—because if courts accept this approach repeatedly, anonymity online starts to look less like a shield and more like a temporary courtesy.

One small, mundane thing that stood out while reviewing the filing details: the subpoena language is the kind that tends to arrive with a dead, official calm—like a letter that doesn’t care who reads it. And that’s probably the point.
