Uruguay’s Miami flight delayed as FIFA and docs clash

Uruguay flight – Uruguay’s World Cup trip to Miami was held up in Cancun after a paperwork problem delayed the squad and a scheduled press conference for coach Marcelo Bielsa. The dispute quickly turned into finger-pointing—Uruguay’s team spokesman blamed FIFA, while FIFA said
Uruguay’s World Cup road to Miami was supposed to be simple: land, brief the press, and prepare for kickoff. Instead, for much of Sunday, the squad was stuck about 45 minutes from the airport at the Mayakoba resort outside Cancun while officials sorted documents for the trip into the United States.
The delay didn’t just disrupt travel. It pushed back a scheduled press conference for manager Marcelo Bielsa after the national team left Mexico only on Sunday, following the paperwork problem.
Uruguay is scheduled to play its World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia on Monday, June 15 at 6 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium outside Miami.
The breakdown centered on who should be held responsible. A Uruguayan team spokesman said FIFA was to blame. while FIFA downplayed the incident and said it was caused by “an airline permitting issue.” In a statement. FIFA said: “Due to an airline permitting error in Mexico. the Uruguay national team’s departure from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline has apologized for the inconvenience caused. FIFA remained in close contact with the Uruguay national team throughout their delay and worked alongside airport and operational partners to help expedite the process and minimize disruption to the team’s travel arrangements.”.
Uruguay’s players and staff didn’t have the luxury of waiting while the dispute played out. Through most of Sunday, they remained at the Mayakoba resort while the federation handled the documentation required for entry and travel arrangements to the United States.
Monday’s match against Saudi Arabia is followed by a game against Cape Verde on June 21 at the same venue, before Uruguay heads back to Mexico to play Spain in Guadalajara on June 26.
The Miami delay sits inside a wider strain affecting the tournament. Visa and travel snags have trailed the World Cup split across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry into the country and will not work the tournament. while Palestinian football federation president Jibril Rajoub said Friday he was still waiting to be let in.
The U.S. State Department has said it is weighing each World Cup visa case on its own after what it described as rigorous vetting. and that it will not bend on U.S. law or national security. Uruguay, meanwhile, sits on the administration’s immigration visa pause list, a factor that means added scrutiny for travelers.
The sequence of events—an on-the-ground delay in Cancun, public disagreement over responsibility, and a separate list of visa complications affecting other participants—creates an environment where even a routine trip can turn into a test of paperwork systems.
As Uruguay works to line up for the Saudi Arabia match on Monday night, the immediate question is not only whether the team will arrive and prepare on time, but who will own the fallout when travel operations and immigration scrutiny collide.

So FIFA messed up paperwork and the team just sits there? Makes no sense.
Wait this was a “simple” landing and press thing but they got stuck at a resort 45 minutes away?? And FIFA says airline permitting error in Mexico. Like okay but who was actually in charge of the itinerary…
Marcelo Bielsa always looks intense so I’m sure he’s gonna be mad, but blaming FIFA seems kinda wild. If it was an airline permitting issue then why is it a FIFA fight at all? Seems like everyone just points at everyone.
Honestly this feels like one of those bureaucratic problems that ruins momentum. They’re playing Saudi Arabia next day like it’s a normal Tuesday. Also Mayakoba resort?? I don’t know why they were even there if the flight was the problem. Sounds like somebody’s passport got lost or something, and now it’s PR blame time.
