Niche has ranked the University of California, Santa Barbara, as the No. 1 party school in the US for 2026.

The ranking doesn’t treat “fun” as a vague idea. It asks students to weigh the party scene on campus. rates athletics and Greek life. and uses US Census data for access to bars and restaurants when determining where students can go after the class day ends. Niche publishes the list every year as part of its annual best colleges coverage. and the result is a map of how college towns turn traditions into pull.

At UC Santa Barbara. that pull is described as Deltopia—an unsanctioned spring break party that draws crowds to Isla Vista. a beach community near the college campus. per the Los Angeles Times. Homecoming celebrations are described as large and historic. with a tradition dating back to 1912. lasting a week and including alumni reunions and a parade. “It is a great school if you are looking to party. be involved. and get a good education. ” one student wrote on Niche.

Indiana University—Bloomington ranked 19th in Bloomington, Indiana. Niche describes a social life shaped by sports and Greek life. with major events like the annual bike race Little 500—billed as “The World’s Greatest College Weekend”—attracting over 25. 000 fans to the university campus. Homecoming is also cited as another large event on students’ calendars. “I loved the strong sense of community that surrounded IU athletics. which brought students together and created unforgettable experiences and school spirit. ” one student wrote on Niche. Another student added that the party scene is active and fun. but that “it helps to be in Greek life if you want to be part of most of it—especially as a first-year.”.

In Miami, Florida, the University of Miami landed at No. 18. Niche links the student culture to active Greek life. South Florida’s year-round warm weather. and access to the city’s nightlife. One student wrote: “Couldn’t have had a better 4 years and more fun time!. I lived basically like Alix Earle (college-wise and not fame-wise).” They continued: “There is something to do every single day. I was able to go out 6 nights a week and maintain my workload pretty easily.” The article also notes over 300 student organizations. Another Niche user said that even if students aren’t “a party animal. ” there are clubs for chess and video games and events hosted by the college year-round. Another said students can meet new people and have new experiences “daily if you look for them.” The arts are also cited. including theater productions. art exhibitions. and music events.

In Boulder, Colorado, the University of Colorado Boulder ranked 14th. Niche says the party reputation spans decades. Since the early 1990s. students have celebrated April 20 as an annual cannabis holiday with a “smokeout” on campus. with estimated crowds of 10. 000 students. employees. and community members gathering to smoke marijuana. Colorado legalized marijuana for medical use in 2000 and for recreational use in 2012, according to the text provided. The school shut down the

event in 2012, spending over $100,000 to do so—yet the broader party school reputation remained. Nicknamed Ole Miss, the S.E.C. school is described as having a large football following and a Greek life scene. with social events involving tailgating on gamedays or going out to bars. restaurants. and music venues in “The Square” on weekends. “We have tons of events planned throughout the year by our student activities team,” one student wrote on Niche. They added: “Our nightlife and city life in Oxford are unmatched in the rest of the S.E.C. and our campus is absolutely beautiful.”.

Penn State landed at No. 12. The Pennsylvania State University in University Park. Pennsylvania. is described as a party school shaped by football. Greek life. and student-led traditions like THON. THON is a student-run charity dance marathon in which 400 student organizations and over 16,000 students participate each year, per the school. “There’s always something happening. whether it’s a club event. a speaker. a game. or just a random Tuesday that turns into a great night with friends. ” one student wrote on Niche.

The school is described as having repeatedly been ranked a top party school. and Niche notes that it is also ranked the best public university in Illinois by Niche. In 2015, Niche says then-university chancellor Phyllis Wise told CNN that the school wasn’t proud of the label. Despite that. students enjoy a vibrant party culture that includes the Unofficial Saint Patrick’s Day celebration during the first week of March. when students party through the weekend in an alternative to the traditional Saint Patrick’s Day. which falls during the school’s spring break. “The definition of study hard, party harder,” one student described the school on Niche. At No. 6. the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Alabama. is described as one of the nation’s largest fraternity and sorority communities in terms of active membership since 2021. with 71 social Greek life chapters. Niche references Bama Rush. a 2023 documentary that took viewers inside sororities and showed the fashion. culture. and shortcomings of Greek-life recruitment. The University of Wisconsin—Madison ranked fifth. Niche says students have access to recreational, leadership-based, and philanthropic activities, and the school has more than 60 Greek organizations. One college junior wrote on Niche: “There is a good campus life and downtown Madison is a great place for socializing and interacting with others.” They added: “Most people here want to see you succeed. and it is a very enjoyable experience.”.

At No. 4, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles is one of two California schools on the list. Niche says USC was ranked fourth-best party school and also ranked as having the best student life in a separate Niche ranking. The school has an acceptance rate of only 10% and a total cost of attendance of over $100,000, per its website. Niche also notes that USC has one of the largest college football teams in the western US. Each year, students welcome the Trojans back to Los Angeles during a weeklong homecoming celebration. Starting on October 3, students and alumni are set to participate in celebratory tailgates and events. The party ranking is said to be helped by USC’s large Greek life scene. which often hosts parties at fraternity houses and welcomes students and parents. including Will Ferrell. “The social and party life is unmatched,” one student wrote on Niche.

Tulane University in New Orleans ranked third. Niche says The Wall Street Journal ranked Tulane the top party school last year. and that Tulane is the second-best school for Greek life in the US per Niche’s 2026 ranking. Niche says its spirited campus atmosphere—especially during Mardi Gras—comes partly from location and “front-row access” to New Orleans’ vibrant culture. In addition to off-site bars and eateries. the college has 25 Greek chapters and more than 200 social clubs. including the Just Dance Club. the Improv Club. and even a crochet club. One college freshman summarized it: “The school is the definition of work hard, play hard(er)!”.

Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida ranked second. Niche also notes that Florida State ranked best school for Greek life in the US in another Niche ranking. Sports are described as a huge part of campus life, with many students supporting athletics from football to golf. When students aren’t rooting for classmates, Niche says they enjoy being part of more than 700 clubs on campus. “FSU is a place that accommodates many lifestyles and types of people,” a college sophomore wrote on Niche. They emphasized that students can have an amazing time without taking a sip of alcohol or going to any of the many nightclubs. because “there’s always something happening right on campus.” The college celebrates homecoming starting on November 19.

All of it—Greek life chapters. tailgates. off-campus nightlife. and the kind of campus tradition that becomes a calendar marker—feeds the same question students and families ask when deciding where to spend four years. In Niche’s 2026 ranking. UC Santa Barbara’s answer is clear: the party is part of the deal. not a side note.
