United expands MileagePlus pooling to 40+ partners

United expands – United has changed one major rule of its MileagePlus miles pooling feature: pooled miles can now be used on more than 40 airline partners. The change removes the old limitation that only allowed partner redemptions on miles individually held by the traveler—no

For MileagePlus members who’ve ever watched a few scattered miles add up—but couldn’t quite reach an award—United’s miles pooling update lands like a long-overdue fix. The airline quietly removed a key constraint that used to make pooling feel like a trade-off.

When United introduced Miles Pooling in 2024. up to five MileagePlus members could pool some or all of their miles into a collective pot. Those miles could then be used to book award flights for someone in (or out of) the pool. The promise was simple: fewer stranded balances and more chance of booking.

The catch was harder to swallow. Pooled miles could only be used to book United or United Express-operated flights. Once miles were added to the pool, travelers lost the ability to use those same miles on partners—airlines such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand and others.

Now that specific limitation has changed.

Pooled United miles are eligible for use with more than 40 United airline partners. including partners both inside and outside Star Alliance. United confirmed the update in a statement shared with The Points Guy Friday. saying: “We’re always looking for new ways to evolve MileagePlus and bring our members more rewards. value and flexibility. We recently expanded Miles Pooling to be available across more than 40 airline partners – making it even easier for families and friends to combine their miles for upcoming trips. MileagePlus members have been able to redeem miles on partner airlines for a long time. and now with expanded Miles Pooling. they’ll be able to pool miles with family and friends to also redeem on other airlines.”.

The practical impact is straightforward: instead of being limited to United- or United Express-operated flights when miles are pooled. members can now book awards across dozens of partners using those pooled miles. That matters most for long-haul international travel, where partner awards can open up itineraries that United-only redemptions can’t match.

There’s still timing and pricing to consider before people fully shift their travel math.

United keeps a 72-hour waiting period from when a member joins the pool until they can contribute miles. After miles are transferred into the pool, there’s also a 24-hour waiting period before those miles are available for use.

On the redemption side. United also continues to apply award pricing discounts based on the elite status level and cardholder status of the person making the booking. That remains true for pooled miles—meaning pooled redemptions can still be discounted (or not) depending on the status and/or relevant United cards held by the traveler booking within the pool.

Put together. the shift is clear: pooling doesn’t just help people reach an award faster anymore—it also preserves access to partner routes that used to disappear the moment miles were combined. For families and groups that travel together often. that added flexibility can turn small mileage balances into something far more usable. especially when partner flights are the difference between “almost” and “booked.”.
