Ukrainian drones strike deep; Moscow’s defense questioned

Ukrainian drones – A Ukrainian drone barrage that hit multiple targets deep inside Russia killed at least four people, damaged infrastructure and residential areas across 14 regions, and prompted analysts to say it exposes Russia’s vulnerability at home—after President Volodymyr
The weekend began with explosions in places far from the front line—and by the time the day was over, at least four people were dead in Russia after Ukrainian drone strikes went deep into Moscow’s orbit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks were a justified response to Russia’s deadly May 14 assault on Kyiv. which killed at least 24 people. including three children. He posted footage on X. saying it shows one of the strikes. and returned to the theme in his nightly address on Sunday. May 17. telling Russians they should be “thinking about their refineries. their oil facilities and enterprises.”.
Ukraine’s Security Service said the attacks on Saturday, May 16, targeted military-industrial and fuel infrastructure in Russia’s Moscow region. Ukraine’s General Staff said the operation used domestically developed RS-1. FP-1 and BARS-SM drones that traveled more than 311 miles into Russian territory. Among the targets cited by Ukrainian officials were the Angstrem Semiconductor Plant in Zelenograd. described as producing microelectronics for Russian weapons systems. and the Solnechnogorsk oil pumping station. which supplies fuel for the military. Ukrainian officials also claimed a strike hit the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district.
Zelensky returned to the same message—these were not random strikes, but pressure aimed at the infrastructure that supports Russia’s war machine. “Russians should be thinking about their refineries, their oil facilities and enterprises,” he said during his Sunday address.
The operation spread across a wide swath of Russia. Russia’s Defense Ministry said around 600 Ukrainian drones were launched over the weekend across 14 Russian regions. Crimea. and the Black and Azov seas. while Moscow said most were intercepted or neutralized by air defenses. Russia’s regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said drone strikes damaged infrastructure and residential areas.
In reported casualty accounts. a woman was killed after a drone struck her home. along with two other reported casualties. while 17 others were injured. Another fatality was reported in Russia’s Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border. Residents in Khimki, Lobnya and Naro-Fominsk reported explosions. Telegram channel Astra said drone debris caused a fire near a runway at Sheremetyevo International Airport. leading to temporary flight diversions and airspace restrictions.
One of the sharpest reactions came from outside the Kremlin. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili said the strikes show that “even heavily fortified Moscow. protected by layered air defense rings. can still be penetrated. ” adding that Ukraine is “effectively bringing the war back to Russia.” Aurélien Colson. academic co-director of the ESSEC Business School Institute for Geopolitics & Business. said the attacks challenge Russia’s long-held idea that geographic size guarantees security. arguing Ukraine’s innovations are “steadily eroding the old Russian assumption that geographic depth equals military safety.” Colson also said Ukrainian drones can now reach roughly a quarter of Russian territory. where about 70% of the population lives.
At the same time, the Kremlin acknowledged the strikes while projecting openness to diplomacy. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow remains open to dialogue with the European Union regarding the war. Russian military bloggers, however, criticized authorities for failing to stop the attacks. Some condemned internet shutdowns in Moscow as ineffective. while others demanded a unified air defense and early-warning network around the capital.
The Institute for the Study of War concluded that the weekend strikes “proved that Russia is unable to effectively defend the Russian capital.” Colson echoed the point directly. saying: “No air defense can fully protect such a vast space against repeated. relatively cheap. adaptable drone attacks. … Ukraine may not be breaking Russia at the front. but it is increasingly able to expose Russia’s vulnerability at home.”.

So they can hit Moscow but “defense” is questioned? Sounds like Russia isn’t as tough as they say.
I saw something about refineries and oil facilities… is that why they keep showing those zoomed in videos? Also how do drones go 311 miles like that, that’s wild.
Wait, I thought Russia basically controls the airspace around Moscow. If 600 drones went out and 4 people died, that doesn’t even seem like a lot? Unless they’re counting injuries or something.
This is gonna sound dumb but… aren’t Ukrainian drones usually getting shot down way earlier? If they’re striking semiconductor plants then maybe Russia’s chips are cooked? Idk I just hate that kids are mentioned.
