Ogwumike spotlights Robinson’s “one job” vs Cavs

Mitchell Robinson’s impact in the paint is being framed as the Knicks’ key advantage heading into Game 1 of the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

When the Eastern Conference Finals tip off on Tuesday night, the New York Knicks won’t just be chasing a matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. They’ll be trying to control a single battle inside the lines—where Mitchell Robinson has repeatedly made Cleveland pay.

Game 1 is set for 8:00 PM E.T.. at Madison Square Garden, and it’s also a rematch of the first-round series in 2023, which the Knicks won 4-1.. But those three years have changed the teams around that familiar core.. The Knicks have added OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns.. Cleveland, for its part, now has James Harden alongside Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, replacing Darius Garland.

Still, for Chiney Ogwumike, the X-factor isn’t who arrived—it’s what Robinson is expected to do once the game turns into a fight for space and rebounds.

“Mitchell Robinson, he got one job,” Ogwumike said on ESPN’s NBA Today on Monday. “To go out there and be a beast on the boards.”

That “one job” carries weight because of how Robinson has already punished this matchup.. In the Knicks’ 106-95 victory in the 2023 closeout Game 5, Robinson recorded 18 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks in 36 minutes.. He wasn’t just active—he was disruptive in the paint. a problem Cleveland struggled to solve then and will be looking to avoid now.

Robinson’s presence on the glass has also shown up again this season against the Cavaliers. In two meetings against Cleveland, he hauled in 29 total rebounds in just 36 minutes of play, including 16 offensive boards.

Jarrett Allen has stepped up of late for Cleveland. to the point that a “Game 7 Jarrett Allen” moniker has emerged around him.. But the Knicks still have their own memory of what happens when the moment gets too bright for a center.. Allen admitted three years ago that the lights got too bright for him—another detail that lands differently when you’re heading back into a series where Robinson has already dominated.

The most obvious storyline is the one fans will watch from the opening minutes: Allen-Mobley against Robinson and the Knicks’ frontcourt physicality.. But the deeper storyline is how much the series could hinge on the paint the way it did before—where rebounds don’t just add possessions. they decide who controls the pace.

If the first game of this Eastern Conference Finals starts to tilt the way Robinson’s track record suggests. it won’t just be a Knicks highlight—it will be the plan taking shape.. Control the boards. own the second chance opportunities. and make Cleveland’s offense play into the Knicks’ size and aggression from the start.
