Government backing fuels Uganda’s five-year FEASSA sports dominance

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association attributes its regional sporting success to strategic government partnerships and infrastructure development.

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has credited continued government support for the steady rise of school sports competitions and Uganda’s dominance at the FEASSA Games in recent years.. In a message authored by USSSA president Justus Mugisha, the association highlighted the role of Education Minister Janet Museveni in the development of school sports through administrative support, talent development programmes, and increased exposure for young athletes.. According to Mugisha, regular engagements between USSSA leaders

and the government since 2019 have contributed to Uganda’s success at the regional level, where the country has won five consecutive FEASSA overall titles in 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, including the latest edition held in Kakamega, Kenya.. The report pointed to growth in organisational structures, capacity building for sports administrators, infrastructural expansion, and improved funding for school competitions as major gains registered over the years.. USSSA also renewed its call for improved sports

infrastructure across the country, requesting the implementation of earlier proposals that include buses for all 19 USSSA zones and the construction of 38 multi-sport facilities to support schools and surrounding communities.. The association noted that expanding facilities and easing transport challenges would strengthen competitions at zonal and national levels while increasing learner participation.. These developments come as the National Ball Games II continue in Lira District, where schools are competing for qualification to this year’s

FEASSA Games scheduled for Morogoro, Tanzania.. Only the top-performing schools will earn the right to represent Uganda at the regional championships, where the country is the overall defending champion.. Bukedea Comprehensive School is among the schools seeking to maintain its strong presence on the regional stage after previous success at FEASSA competitions.
