UFC Freedom 250 opens with anthem praise at White House

UFC Freedom 250 unfolded on the White House South Lawn with a sweeping national anthem performance by Zac Brown Band drawing rave reviews, even as rain and storm worries hovered earlier in the day. The event still got underway shortly after the scheduled 8pm s

When the chorus of trumpets rose over the White House’s South Lawn. it didn’t sound like background music for an event. It sounded like an opening statement. Donald Trump arrived on Sunday alongside UFC chief Dana White. and the atmosphere quickly turned toward something bigger than a normal fight-night preamble.

The night—UFC Freedom 250. staged as a celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary and President Trump’s 80th birthday—was set into motion with a 12-jet flyover and a musical centerpiece before the first bout. Zac Brown Band was granted the honor of performing The Star-Spangled Banner. followed by AC/DC’s Thunderstruck blaring as the jets roared overhead.

The anthem performance instantly grabbed attention online. One fan wrote on X: “Tonight’s Rendition of Our National Anthem Was One of the Best Ever – It was Preformed by Country Singer Zac Brown. along with The Marine Band – God Bless America!” Another posted: “Zac Brown Band and that flyover. That’s my favorite performance of The National Anthem of all time.” A third added: “Zac Brown is a once in a generation talent and the United States’ military is nothing short of bada**”.

The praise mattered because the evening had looked like it could unravel before it began. A forecast had threatened rain and thunderstorms around the time the event was scheduled to start at 8pm. Dana White had insisted ahead of the card that nothing would stop it—even if the skies turned.

Earlier on Sunday. when the Weather Channel reported “Rain. 30mph winds and mosquitos on the White House lawn. ” an administration spokesperson fired back on X through the @RapidResponse47 account. The post said: “This event is about celebrating America’s unmatched greatness after 250 years — which apparently doesn’t sit well with the friendless loser who wrote this bulls*** clickbait headline.”.

By the time attendees arrived, the storms held off. The fight card started shortly after the original 8pm start time.

The performances on the South Lawn didn’t fade after the opening stretch. The first bout between Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia delivered a knockout that snapped the crowd into focus immediately, with an emphatic finish by Lopes.

Then Bo Nickal and Kyle Daukaus went to work in what built into a direct clash of styles, but Nickal took control quickly, dominating the bout and knocking out Daukaus.

Michael Chandler—one of the event’s most well-known fan favorites—ran into a rough night next. He suffered a brutal defeat to lightweight rival Mauricio Ruffy, with Ruffy ending the contest in the first round by putting on what was described as a striking clinic.

From the sky overhead to the finishes inside the cage, UFC Freedom 250 found its momentum early—and with the anthem now earning “best ever” comparisons from fans watching at home and in the crowd, the event’s first moments set the tone for the rest of the night.

  1. I saw the Zac Brown part on my feed and was like okay that’s kinda patriotic. But why are they doing UFC stuff at the White House anyway? Seems like it could’ve been a total mess with the rain.

  2. Wait so they had jets and the Marine Band or whatever before the fights? I don’t even watch UFC but that sounds like a campaign ad disguised as sports. Also the headline makes it sound like Trump was there for the music more than the event lol.

  3. Zac Brown Band doing the anthem is nice but I keep thinking about how weather app said storms and 30mph winds and mosquitos?? Like did they spray the lawn or something because that’s not a joke. And Trump being 80?? I guess Dana White thinks rain can’t stop anything but thunderstorms stop everything in my town.
