U.S. wins Group D after Paraguay tops Turkey

U.S. clinches – A Paraguay goal inside minutes against Turkey on Friday, June 19 meant the U.S. men’s national team could secure Group D at the 2026 World Cup at home, capping a strong start that included a 2-0 win over Australia and an earlier 4-1 victory vs. Paraguay.

The U.S. men’s national team didn’t just play a match on Friday night. It watched another result decide its fate, and the timing made it feel like the tournament’s pressure was already on full blast.

After the United States defeated Australia 2-0 on Friday. June 19—moving to six points through two matches despite Christian Pulisic nursing a calf injury—it needed Paraguay to defeat or draw Turkey to clinch Group D at the 2026 World Cup on home soil. The scenario came down to a single question: could the same group of games that had tested the U.S. also deliver the outcome it wanted?.

Paraguay answered fast. Matías Galarza put Paraguay on the board in the second minute with the fastest goal of the World Cup so far, and Paraguay held on to earn a 1-0 victory over Turkey—despite playing with 10 men for much of the match. With that result, the United States won Group D.

This is the first time the U.S. has won its group since the 2010 World Cup. Back then, it needed a late goal from Landon Donovan in a match against Algeria, a win that helped the team outlast England in its group. The U.S. also topped a three-team group at the 1930 World Cup.

In the present tournament. the sequence has already been striking for a side facing the weight of expectations that comes with playing in front of home crowds. The U.S. opened the World Cup with an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay, including a brace from Folarin Balogun. Then the 2-0 win over Australia—also on Friday. June 19—left the Stars and Stripes with a plus-5 goal differential after two matches.

July 1. when it plays the third-place team of either Group B. E. F. I or J at Levi’s Stadium in the Bay Area.

The U.S. is co-hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada. It last hosted in 1994, reaching the Round of 16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Brazil.

  1. I’m confused though—did the U.S. even play Turkey at all yet? Also Pulisic calf injury sounds scary.

  2. Wait Paraguay topples Turkey and then the U.S. “wins the group” like that? That feels rigged lowkey, like the schedule just works out. Either way I’ll take it.

  3. Home World Cup pressure is a real thing, I guess. Also isn’t it weird they’re saying first time since 2010 but then talking about 1930 too… time doesn’t add up in my head. Plus 48 teams = more games, so yeah I’m already tired and it’s barely started. SoFi Stadium Thursday, I’ll pretend I know who they’re playing first.
