U.S. may face Australia without Pulisic’s left calf

SEATTLE — The U.S. can win a lot of ways in tournament soccer. But on the night before Friday’s group-stage showdown with Australia, one question has narrowed everything: what happens if Christian Pulisic’s left calf doesn’t hold.

The U.S. takes on Australia at 3 p.m. Eastern at Lumen Field, and the match feels like more than a regular checkpoint. Both teams began their Group D schedules with convincing wins— the U.S. beat Paraguay 4-1. while Australia topped Turkey 2-0—so whoever wins Friday’s game is positioned to control the path to the knockout stage.

Pulisic is the player the Americans keep returning to as they picture that path. Against Paraguay last Friday, he was kicked in the left calf and exited at halftime. The difference afterward was visible. After Pulisic was replaced by midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, Paraguay found its only goal after the break. That timing matters, because it lines up with the moment Pulisic’s presence ended.

Teammate Sergiño Dest didn’t dress it up. “Christian is a really important player for us. He can be really dangerous on the wing side,” Dest said. In a tournament where small edges can decide seeding, those words land with extra weight.

Pulisic has been training individually all week long, building toward a decision that still isn’t final. On Thursday, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino said the team would make a last determination later. “He’s evolving. He’s much better from Friday. We’ll see,” Pochettino said. He added that if Pulisic isn’t available for Friday. the expectation is that he could return for the next match: “I think at the moment we think if he’s not available for [Friday]. he’ll be available for the next game. He’s [making] a massive effort trying to be ready.”.

That next game is already on the calendar: the U.S. will face Turkey next Thursday, June 25. For now, the focus stays on Pulisic’s calf because his impact has been concrete, not theoretical. In the 4-1 win over Paraguay, he played a key role in creating two of the three first-half U.S. goals.

If Pulisic doesn’t play on the left wing. the likely injury replacement is Brenden Aaronson. the 25-year-old midfielder for Leeds United. Aaronson told reporters Wednesday. “I’m always ready to play. ” and he pointed toward the real question of the moment: “Hopefully Christian’s going to be ready for the game because he’s a big player to us. and we really want him to be there.”.

Australia arrives at Lumen Field tied with the U.S. in Group D standings after its 2-0 win over Turkey last week. Turkey’s roster includes well-known names like Arda Güler of Real Madrid and Kenan Yıldız of Juventus. and that is part of why Australia’s early result has felt sharper—some analysts had considered Turkey the strongest team in the group.

The matchup itself carries history too. The last time the U.S. played Australia was an international friendly in October 2025. It was a tense, foul-filled game that the Americans won 2-1. Pulisic left that match with an injury to his right leg after being tripped by Australian defender Jason Geria. a reminder that the physical edge between these teams is not new.

On Thursday, Weston McKennie framed what Friday could become. “They’re a very physical team. They have guys in the back. I think crosses in the box will be very hard to get past them. and they have speed up top for counterattacks. ” he said. “It’s going to be a battle, I know that for sure, and a rough one as well.”.

So as kickoff approaches, the U.S. isn’t only preparing for Australia’s style. It’s preparing for a smaller, more personal variable—whether Pulisic’s left calf allows him to stay on the field at the exact point where the U.S. looked most dangerous against Paraguay.

The tournament standings will eventually settle who deserved the driver’s seat. But on Friday, the most immediate driver is likely to be health, timing, and whether Pulisic can turn his individual training into a full-strength return.

  1. I didn’t even know Pulisic was hurt again, like how does he always get nicked up?? Also why is the whole story about his calf like it’s destiny.

  2. So he got kicked in the calf vs Paraguay and left at halftime, but they’re acting like Australia will magically score right when he’s out. Maybe Berhalter is the real problem? Or maybe it’s the coach, idk. I just feel like if you’re training “individually” you’re already not good enough.

  3. Lumen Field in Seattle… that’s gonna be cold, and calves don’t like cold, so I’m guessing he’s gonna sit. Also if they “control the path” to knockout stage then whoever wins decides who gets sent home?? Seems like they’re being way too dramatic for a group game.
