Tulsi Gabbard quits DNI role after rare cancer diagnosis

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said she will resign effective June 30, 2026, citing a family emergency after her husband was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. President Donald Trump confirmed her exit and named Principal De

For weeks, Tulsi Gabbard’s position as Director of National Intelligence had been framed by scrutiny and sharp questions about her fitness for the job. Now the pressure is shifting in a different direction—toward her family.

Gabbard announced she is resigning next month. telling President Donald Trump in a letter she shared to social media that her resignation would be “effective June 30. 2026.” She said the reason was personal and immediate: her husband. Abraham. “has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”.

“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” Gabbard wrote. She described Abraham as her “rock.”

Trump confirmed the resignation Friday afternoon in a post on Truth Social. He said Gabbard “had done a great job,” adding that she deserved time with “her wonderful husband … bringing him back to good health as they currently fight a tough battle together.” Trump said. “I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. ” and also wrote that “Tulsi has done an incredible job. and we will miss her.”.

The move immediately raises a different kind of question for the intelligence community: who will steer the DNI office through the transition, and how quickly the administration can stabilize leadership in the wake of controversy.

Trump said Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas will replace Gabbard as acting director.

Gabbard’s confirmation to the role came in February 2025, after months of debate about her qualifications following earlier ambitions within the Democratic Party—including her desire to become the party’s presidential nominee.

Her tenure also carried politically loaded moments that drew attention well beyond Capitol Hill. As director. Gabbard falsely claimed that former President Barack Obama’s administration orchestrated a “yearslong coup and treasonous conspiracy” to undermine Trump. And in March. during a tense period when Trump bombarded Iran. Gabbard faced a direct question at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing—whether Iran had posed an “imminent” threat to the United States before the U.S. launched missile strikes against Tehran. She did not answer in a way lawmakers expected; she told them. “The only person who can determine what is and is not an imminent threat is the president.”.

Taken together. Gabbard’s resignation letter and Trump’s confirmation leave little doubt about the timeline: her departure is scheduled for June 30. 2026. with Lukas stepping in as acting director immediately. Behind the personal language about cancer and support. the government now has to manage the operational reality of leadership change in the country’s intelligence apparatus—and the unfinished questions that followed Gabbard into the job.

  1. So she quit after getting cancer news? That’s honestly understandable but I still don’t get why people were questioning her in the first place. Like if she’s capable, why all the drama? Anyway I hope it works out.

  2. Wait De For is gonna run it?? I thought Principal De For was already like a manager or something. Also “acting director” sounds temporary but these intel transitions never seem fast. Idk why people are acting like this is just a family thing when the whole job was already under a microscope.

  3. I saw this headline and immediately assumed it was politics, like they forced her out. Then I read it was “family emergency” and I’m like ok sure, cancer is serious, but still… Trump always says someone “did a great job” right before swapping them. Who’s the DNI even now? Feels like the whole intelligence community is just constantly changing leadership.
