Tuchel leaves Palmer, Foden, Maguire out of 26

Tuchel leaves – England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup has notable absences: Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold are left out as manager Thomas Tuchel insists he’s building a team for chemistry, not simply collecting talent.

In a packed international spotlight—already sharpened by a fierce memory of Senegal’s 2002 upset over defending champions France—England’s World Cup roster is carrying its own shockwaves.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has named a star-studded 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, but the omissions have landed like loud misses. Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all absent from the team that begins England’s campaign.

Palmer was the name many expected to travel without much debate. He broke through for Chelsea in the 2023-24 season and scored in the Euro 2024 final. Yet Tuchel’s selection left him out, with Palmer unable to recapture the same form.

Foden’s absence reads differently to fans, because his ceiling is still obvious on talent alone. At 26, he was Premier League player of the year and started that Euro final two years ago. But his playing time has diminished at Manchester City as he struggled to find consistency. and Tuchel brought in multiple players to compete.

The roster also cuts away at history and reputation. Harry Maguire. 33. has been a leader on England’s back line since before the 2018 World Cup. and he posted on social media that he was “shocked and gutted” to miss out on the World Cup roster. Tuchel didn’t ignore that reaction—he addressed it directly. saying he could see the reason behind Maguire’s disappointment. but was surprised by his comments because they had a private conversation and Maguire had the chance to express his feelings. which he did.

And then there’s Alexander-Arnold. who moved to Real Madrid this season after winning two Premier League titles and a Champions League with childhood club Liverpool. His passing range is described in the football world as among the best. Still, Tuchel’s conservative approach left little room for defensive liabilities.

Tuchel framed the decision with an argument that goes beyond any individual name. After announcing his roster. he said. “From day one we were clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team. which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.” He added: “Teams win championships. It’s as simple as that.” And he connected that philosophy to something more intangible than form lines: “Everything I know and hear about international football is that it is about the team and the chemistry.”.

That stance runs through the squad he did select—where balance, roles, and defensive reliability appear to matter as much as star power.

The list of England’s 26-man squad is as follows.

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), James Trafford (Manchester City).

Defenders: Dan Burn (Newcastle United), Marc Guehi (Manchester City), Reece James (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea), Nico O’Reilly (Manchester City), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa).

Forwards: Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona on loan from Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

Taken together. the exclusions sharpen the same central tension: England fans may still see Palmer’s Euro-winning moment. Foden’s recent peak. Maguire’s longstanding leadership. and Alexander-Arnold’s elite delivery. But Tuchel has made it clear he’s prioritizing what he believes wins tournaments—team structure and chemistry—over the instinct to reward the brightest names on reputation alone.
