When the fireworks stopped at Mount Rushmore after 2020, the absence lingered. This year, the schedule is moving again—starting with a headline appearance from President Donald Trump.
Trump is set to headline a pre-Independence Day celebration at Mount Rushmore on July 3. according to a White House official. as part of broader plans built around the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event will take place at the national memorial hosted by Freedom 250. the group working with the administration to stage anniversary activities.
The July 3 program is scheduled to include fireworks, military bands, flyovers, tributes to the Armed Services, and a speech from the president. Freedom 250 said the speech would commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and “chart a course for America’s next chapter.”
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum framed the setting as central to the message. In a statement shared with the press. Burgum said: “Mount Rushmore stands as a tribute to the leaders who shaped the American experiment and secured the blessings of liberty for generations to come.” He added. “As we mark 250 years. there’s no more fitting place to honor how far we’ve come. and to look ahead with optimism to the next chapter of the American story.”.
This is also the first time Mount Rushmore will host a July 3 fireworks display since 2020, when Trump also attended during his first term in office. The National Park Service and the state of South Dakota are coordinating the celebration, and a lottery for tickets has already concluded.
The president’s July schedule is not limited to South Dakota. Trump will be in Medora. North Dakota. on July 1 to dedicate the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. and he is staging another rally on the National Mall on July 4. Earlier. Trump has leaned into anniversary pageantry. including a rally on the National Mall to kick off the Great American State Fair.
That June 24 rally replaced a concert series that was canceled after musicians began pulling out, with some citing concerns about politics. Trump also hosted an Ultimate Fighting Championship contest at the White House that was billed as an anniversary event.
The mounting question around the fireworks is not just timing—it’s also precedent. Indigenous groups protested the last time Mount Rushmore hosted a fireworks display. After that, the Biden administration rejected subsequent attempts to add fireworks at the national monument. In 2022, the National Park Service said tribal groups raised concerns about the “adverse effect to the traditional cultural landscape.”.
The facts on the calendar now make the stakes feel sharper: fireworks are returning to Mount Rushmore for a July 3 celebration after the 2020 appearance. while the ticket lottery has already ended and Trump’s speech will be delivered beneath the granite faces as the country marks 250 years. In South Dakota. the program is designed to blend spectacle and commemoration; in the background. the prior objections remain part of the story’s shadow.

So he’s doing fireworks at Rushmore again, cool I guess.
250th anniversary at Mount Rushmore sounds like a lot of hype for one speech. Also is it still fireworks if they “ended” them in 2020? I’m confused but whatever.
Wait so they’re saying the fireworks stopped after 2020 like it was weather? Because I swear I saw something about “security” and now it’s just back on. Either way, lottery already concluded so regular people basically never get to go.
Freedom 250 this, next chapter that… it’s basically a campaign event wearing patriotic clothes. Mount Rushmore is already controversial and now they’re flying bands and doing flyovers like it’s 4th of July year-round. I wonder if they’re gonna shut down the whole area and make locals deal with traffic for a week. Also Burgum talking about liberty like that doesn’t mean anything when ticket stuff is locked behind a lottery.
