On Thursday, President Donald Trump stepped up to present the Congressional Medal of Honor and found himself in an awkward fight with the simplest part of the job: getting the medal onto the serviceman.
The moment came when Trump was presenting U.S. Army Major Nicholas Dockery with the military’s highest honor. In video of the ceremony, Trump is seen patted Dockery somewhat bizarrely on the back before attempting to drape the medal around his neck.
Then the ceremony stalled—at least visibly. Trump began fiddling with the band’s clasp and struggled to secure it for nearly a minute. When he finally tied the medal tightly in a crude knot, jeers rippled from those in attendance. Trump also appeared to say something to Dockery as the crowd laughed. though what he said is not clearly audible in the recordings.
Before the Medal of Honor presentation, Trump delivered a joke that landed with a different kind of edge. He quipped that he wanted to give himself the medal. saying. “But only a few have received our highest military distinction. the Congressional Medal of Honor. I wanted to give it to myself.” He added, “But I was informed I couldn’t do it. And I couldn’t find anything where I was actually worthy. So here we are.”.
Online. critics seized on the same visible details that dominated the ceremony—how long it took Trump to drape the medal around Dockery’s neck and the technique he used once the clasp finally failed him. The backlash. concentrated on social media. came quickly and sharply. turning what should have been a solemn moment into one defined by ridicule.

Dude literally couldn’t tie a medal… come on.
I saw the clip and it’s like he didn’t even know what the clasp was for. Also the joke about giving himself the medal just seems so gross, like read the room.
Maybe the medal was rigged or something? Like why would it take that long unless there was an issue. People are acting like it’s the end of the world but I’ve seen those fastenings be weird, especially on camera.
Not gonna lie, the crowd laughing tells me it wasn’t just one awkward second. First he pats him weird, then he’s struggling with the band for forever, then he ties it in a knot?? Also wasn’t this the guy who said he deserved it in the past like somehow? Feels like the whole ceremony was clowning. I mean yeah it’s supposed to be military honor but he made it about himself again.
