Trump Mobile starts T1 public sales despite preorder gaps

For anyone trying to buy Trump Mobile’s T1 Phone today, the path looks clear. For many people who tried first—during pre-orders—the story appears stalled.
Trump Mobile has quietly opened general sales of its $499 T1 Phone. even as many early pre-order customers reportedly still haven’t received their devices or updates. One of them, Android Authority, said it placed a pre-order by paying the required $100 deposit when pre-orders first opened. It then waited—without receiving any shipping information or communication from the company.
There’s another detail that stands out just as sharply: when Android Authority entered its shipping information on Trump Mobile’s website. the final checkout price increased from the advertised $499 to $540. The additional $41.75 was labeled as an “Equipment Tax.” The amount. the publication said. closely matches what you’d expect from ordinary state and local sales tax on a $499 purchase—even though the label itself is unusual.
Opening sales to the public may seem like a straightforward business step. But it’s also a strange timing choice when pre-orders still haven’t been fulfilled for many early buyers. Trump Mobile has not yet delivered many pre-orders. and the T1 Phone has been surrounded by controversy over its marketing and origins since day one.
On paper, the hardware is built to compete in the mid-range: a 6.78-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, and 512GB of storage. The camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 50MP 2x telephoto camera, and a 50MP selfie shooter.
Power and software are also part of the pitch. The T1 packs a 5,000mAh battery—about 400mAh larger than the HTC U24 Pro’s battery—and supports 30W wired charging. It ships with Android 15 out of the box.
Whether that combination is enough to win buyers is an open question. What’s harder to avoid right now is the situation facing the people who already paid: many of the customers who ordered the phone from day one are still waiting to receive the device they already put a $100 deposit down for. With public sales now open. the next test for Trump Mobile is whether it can fulfill new orders while the earlier backlog remains unresolved.

So they’re selling it now but people still don’t have theirs? Wild.
“Equipment Tax” sounds like a scam tbh. Like why not just call it sales tax? Also $499 turning into $540 is not “small” when you’re trying to budget.
I don’t get it, I saw something on TikTok that says preorders already shipped? Maybe Android Authority is wrong or the update email got lost in spam? Either way if the price jump is real then that’s shady.
This is why I don’t preorder phones anymore. They open “general sales” while the first people are still waiting, like that’s normal. And calling it an “equipment tax” just makes me think they’re adding random fees after the fact. Also I saw “Android 15” and thought, great, but if they can’t even send the device, who cares about the specs.
