Trump heads to Camp David as Vance delays Switzerland trip

President Donald Trump is preparing to leave Washington on Friday afternoon for Camp David, the presidential retreat about 70 miles away in Maryland—an abrupt decision that comes while U.S.-Iran negotiations remain in a holding pattern.

The president is set to spend the weekend at the compound built in 1938, with his Saturday and Sunday plans left mostly blank except for “executive time” commitments listed as 8 a.m. on both days. Trump is scheduled to return to Washington at an unspecified time on Sunday.

The timing matters because, at the G7 summit, Trump told reporters the U.S. will continue bombing Iran if Iran does not abide by its agreement with the United States.

It will be only Trump’s second visit of his second term to Camp David. The White House did not immediately respond to a question about why he is traveling there.

Vice President JD Vance’s canceled Switzerland trip is part of the same diplomatic pressure—and uncertainty. Vance canceled a Friday trip to Switzerland, where the U.S. was expected to advance peace talks with Iran toward a final agreement following a memorandum of understanding reached this week.

A White House spokesperson said the decision was driven by logistical issues and added that “the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized.”

The memorandum of understanding this week reopened the Strait of Hormuz and established a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. After that initial step. the parties are set to negotiate for the next 60 days over issues described as far more complicated—especially mechanisms intended to ensure Iran does not possess a nuclear weapon.

Trump’s Camp David trip also follows a prior attempt to use the retreat as a diplomatic and policy hub. He previously planned to hold a Cabinet meeting at Camp David in May, but canceled those plans because poor weather would have complicated the helicopter flight to the retreat.

His only other visit during his second term came in June 2025, when he met with military leaders amid protests in California over the administration’s efforts to deport immigrants in the country unlawfully.

Right now, the weekend schedule at Camp David offers few public clues about what Trump will do there—while negotiations with Iran hinge on compliance, technical planning, and a clock measured in 60 days.
