Trump debuts converted Qatari Air Force One bridge jet

converted Qatari-owned – President Donald Trump unveiled the new Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base: a formerly Qatari-owned jumbo jet converted into the official U.S. presidential aircraft. He said the plane will go to the NATO summit in Ankara next month, do a July 4 flyover, a
When President Donald Trump stepped out of the new Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base. Md. it wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a statement in paint. timing. and travel. Inside the massive hangar. with a couple hundred Air Force personnel assembled and his signature tune. “God Bless the USA. ” playing. Trump framed the aircraft as a “flying White House” built to outshine every landing.
The new plane replaces the old Kennedy-era robin’s egg blue exterior with a bolder scheme: the underbelly is navy blue with a red stripe above it. The presidential seal appears on the left side where the president boards, and a massive American flag is displayed on the tail.
Trump confirmed he would be taking the jet to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, next month. He also said he would return to China “at some point. ” a reference he pointed to as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit being hosted in China in November. He said his trip from the Group of 7 summit in France this week was the last planned trip aboard the old Air Force One.
He struck the familiar contrast between spectacle and normalcy as he spoke about airports and optics. “Now. when we land at airports in London and in Germany and different places. nobody tops this one. ” Trump said. adding that the design and colors were “my taste. I will say.” He also said the new Air Force One will do a flyover during the July 4 celebrations next month.
The aircraft itself is at the center of the broader debate around how the United States should approach gifts. symbolism. and the line between necessity and principle. The jet was a luxury Boeing 747 that had been owned by Qatar before it was converted into U.S. presidential service. The administration formally accepted the gift from Qatar last year. even as questions have persisted about the ethics and legality of accepting such an expensive transfer from a foreign government.
Trump previously insisted he would not fly around in the Qatari jet once he leaves office, saying it would instead be donated to a future presidential library. On Friday, the new rollout made clear that, at least for now, the “bridge” is airborne.
That bridge is also temporary by design. The Air Force One Trump unveiled is meant to carry the president until new planes ordered directly from Boeing arrive. currently slated for 2028. Trump described the wait as a “little bit of a logjam. ” explaining that Boeing’s delivery schedule has slipped—originally targeted for 2024—leaving the administration needing an interim solution.
He recalled asking Qatar’s emir for use of one of their planes. “See, a normal president wouldn’t do this. A normal president wants to stay away from aircraft,” Trump said. “But our country has to be represented properly.”
Inside the aircraft hangar, Air Force officials emphasized that the conversion was built around security and capability. In a news release issued Friday. the Air Force said that any plane designated as Air Force One “must meet rigorous security requirements. ” and that the Qatari plane “was modified under a disciplined engineering approach that prioritized these exact core capabilities above all else.” The Air Force added that “much of the previous head of state interior layout” was kept intact.
The security modifications have previously been described by the Air Force as costing less than $400 million.
The political fight over the presidential airplane isn’t new. Trump’s efforts to reimagine Air Force One began in his first administration. when he directed that an incoming fleet adopt a color scheme nearly identical to that of his personal airplane. Then-President Joe Biden reversed that decision in March 2023 after an Air Force review suggested the darker colors could increase costs and delay delivery of the new jets. When Trump returned to office, he brought back the desired colors for the plane.
The same red, white, and navy scheme will also be used on other government jets that carry other top administration officials, the Air Force said earlier this year.
The Air Force also said on Friday that the two current Air Force One planes—known as VC-25As—will not be retiring. An Air Force spokesperson. who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive plans. told the Associated Press that the VC-25As will remain in the fleet until the new Boeing planes. referred to as VC-25Bs. come into service.
What happens to the older jets once the new ones arrive remains unclear. The spokesperson said that both the Qatari jet and the VC-25As will be available for use, and that the Presidential Airlift Group will select the appropriate aircraft for each mission based on operational requirements.
There is a practical reason the schedule matters: while the new jets are slated for 2028. the president’s calendar doesn’t pause. The sequence of Friday’s announcements—from the NATO trip in Ankara to the July 4 flyover—puts the converted jet in immediate motion. even as questions about its origin and procurement have followed the program for more than a year.
For now. the hangar at Andrews Air Force Base holds two truths at once: the aircraft has been positioned as a secure. disciplined conversion tailored for presidential missions. and it remains tied to the controversy of a foreign government’s gift—now made visible in navy blue. red. and a massive American flag.

So it’s Qatari now? weird flex for Air Force One lol.
They really changed the whole paint scheme like that’s the important part. Red stripe navy underbelly sounds like a NASCAR sponsor, not a presidential plane.
I’m confused… didn’t we already have an Air Force One? Like this is just a different plane, but they’re making it sound like it’s brand new news every week. Also Turkey next month?? I thought that summit was in Europe somewhere else, idk. Why would Trump be taking a Qatari-owned jet over there anyway.
“Flying White House” is just marketing. The whole point is to get the president there safely, not to repaint it like a sports car. But I gotta admit the July 4 flyover thing will be cool, even if it’s probably just for optics. Also he said he’ll go back to China “at some point”?? That’s not really a plan, that’s like me saying I’ll do taxes later.
