Delta adds Austin–San Jose nonstop, starts Oct. 6

Delta adds – Delta will launch nonstop service from Austin Bergstrom International Airport to San Jose, California, beginning Oct. 6, strengthening its growing focus city presence at AUS. The airline also plans an additional third daily roundtrip between Austin and Orlando

On a day when Texas Hill Country still doesn’t feel like “Delta country,” the airline is making a clear bet on Austin. Delta announced it will add nonstop service from Austin Bergstrom International Airport to San Jose, California.

The new Austin–San Jose route starts this fall and is set to begin on Oct. 6. Delta will operate the flight year-round, and it will be the carrier’s second Bay Area nonstop from Austin once it launches—joining its existing service from Austin to San Francisco International Airport.

Delta says the aircraft will be an Airbus A319 with 132 seats for the San Jose route. The logic is straightforward on the map: Austin and San Jose are both major tech hubs. On the ground. it’s a fresh headache—and opportunity—for travelers who already choose between airlines based on schedules and award availability.

Competition is already lined up. Southwest currently operates Austin–San Jose flights, meaning Delta’s new nonstop won’t be the only option for people trying to get to the Bay Area from the Texas capital.

Delta’s growth at AUS has accelerated over the past couple of years. Cirium data cited with the announcement shows that just two years ago Delta operated just over 14,000 departures from Austin. This year, the airline is on track to exceed 21,000 departures—an increase of around 47%.

Even with that momentum, Delta still isn’t at the scale of its hub cities. The airline’s Austin footprint remains far smaller than what it flies from its true hubs like Detroit. Minneapolis or Salt Lake City. and well behind its Atlanta “mega-hub.” In Austin. Delta also remains behind Southwest in the market. Southwest is described as the clear market leader, while Delta is still listed as the No. 2 airline.

For frequent flyers, though, the practical shift is hard to miss. Delta’s offerings at AUS have broadened over time to include service to major metropolitan areas and smaller destinations as well, including McAllen, Texas and Fargo, N.D.

The San Jose expansion is paired with another added flight option. Along with the new Austin–San Jose route, Delta revealed it will add a third daily roundtrip between Austin and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

In a statement, the airline said, “Together, the changes strengthen Delta’s presence in Austin while adding more flexibility for customers traveling across the South, West Coast and key leisure destinations.”

For travelers in Austin, the timing matters: Oct. 6 is close enough to plan for, but far enough that seat choices and loyalty math will matter. Delta’s push makes the Bay Area easier to reach from AUS—without requiring a stop—and it also makes Orlando a bit more frequent for anyone hopping between Texas and Central Florida.

  1. I don’t get it, Delta’s in Austin but it’s still not “Delta country” lol. Guess tech people just have to fly to San Jose now. Also Southwest already does that route so is this just extra money grab?

  2. Wait, Austin to San Jose nonstop starting Oct 6… does that mean they’ll stop the Orlando flights too? The article mentions a third daily roundtrip but then it’s like “additional” like it’s replacing something. I’m confused.

  3. Austin and San Jose are “tech hubs” so it makes sense on a map 🙄 but on the ground it’s gonna be crowded as hell at AUS. A319 with 132 seats sounds small? Like that won’t help much compared to bigger planes. And if Southwest already flies it, Delta will have to discount right? Probably not, knowing airlines.
