President Donald Trump didn’t wait for the right moment—he took it during his Oval Office press questions, with the vote-counting problem already hanging over the room.
The immediate target was Trump’s voter ID bill, the SAVE Act. A reporter asked whether there was enough Republican support in Congress to pass it. Trump began to answer, then pivoted into an extended, personal pitch about why opposition from within the party would be wrong.
“He, you know, got thrown out of his position,” Trump said of Sen. Mitch McConnell. adding that McConnell was “an angry man” and “very disloyal to John Thune.” Trump also argued that McConnell should be “very thankful” to him because. in Trump’s telling. judges were made possible by Trump’s win and decisions rather than McConnell’s leadership. Trump said McConnell “gets credit for appointing judges” but “didn’t appoint anybody,” while Trump said “I did.”.
Trump’s case for himself wasn’t abstract. He connected it directly to the judges eventually being approved and to what he described as the failure of McConnell’s record. He also criticized McConnell for sending money to Democrats. saying McConnell “gave so much money to Democrats. ” while Trump said he “had to go get the wall money from the military” because McConnell “wouldn’t do anything.”.
The exchange then moved—still without easing—from McConnell to Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Trump called Murkowski “terrible. terrible to us” and “terrible to the country. ” and suggested she would be a “negative vote.” He also said he “almost feel[s] guilty” about the amount he’s done for Alaska. saying it’s “the right thing to do” but that Murkowski is “just an impediment.”.
When the reporter asked for timing on a supplemental—referencing whether there would be one—Trump turned the conversation back to votes and geography, arguing he has “done a lot for Alaska” and asking rhetorically whether anyone has “done more for Alaska than me.”
Trump also spared less praise than usual for Sen. Rand Paul, though the tone was different. He said Paul “has come a long way” and suggested Paul might support the effort Trump is pushing—saying Paul likes “Save America.” Trump added that Paul is “usually a negative vote. ” but said he believed Paul might back it anyway.
The political tension behind the personal language is stark. The GOP currently holds a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate. With that margin, Trump can only afford to lose four votes to pass his agenda. His comments didn’t fall on friendly ears among members of his own party; in addition to his attacks on McConnell and Murkowski. Trump’s pressure campaign has also included targeting other senators he will need. including Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC).
The situation becomes sharper when paired with the senators who are already part of the political fight around Trump’s endorsements. The remarks mention that Trump’s attacks extend beyond the Senate to include primary opponents he endorsed—Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and John Cornyn (R-TX). In that light.
